Here's a twist on the counterfeit gold bar story:
More: https://www.moneyweb.co.za/mineweb/fake-branded-bars-slip-dirty-gold-into-world-markets/

I reckon its wrong to refer to it as counterfeit gold.
It is as pure as the bar whose number it uses so it is gold

If I took delivery of one of these bars do you suppose I would have any problems re- introducing it to LMBA handlers ?
If it was not in the LMBA accounting system they would assay it and if of the purity claimed in the assay mark, accept it.
Everybody is so secretive about serial numbers cos they have probably leased it out a few times over that no one will be able to do any more than see where it was minted, its weight and purity.

So if you are an illegal miner or want to launder some stolen gold, this will be your route I reckon and this is what the moaning is really about.

High gold prices have triggered the amount of fake gold bars that are being circulated in the market. If you want to buy a 20 kg gold bar, always buy it from a reputable seller because fake sellers are faking it and selling the 20 kg gold bar at a low price to fool buyers. Also, don't get trapped in bulk deals that many China factories offer.

Dave, there have always been fake bars around but now there are scanners available that can determine what is in the bar, that are affordable for dealers and even individuals.
This thread is a discussion about real gold with counterfeit serial numbers as apparently this is a problem for the controllers.

Oh dear, our vault is full of 99.999 fine gold that has all been assayed but it has the same bar numbers as bars that are apparently in Fort Knox .......
