Russia, the UAE and Sudan's stolen gold | The Big Picture

As a new gold rush takes over the world, driving up the price of gold to historic levels, the UAE has strategically turned itself into a global hub for gold, and gold laundering.
And it's done this partly through financing civil war in Africa, and in particular, Sudan, where a brutal all our war has waged for two years between the country’s military and a rogue mercenary army that’s figured out how to exchange gold for weapons.
This is that story.

I'll watch it when I have time. I spent 18 mos in 1970's Turkey and saw myself the generational worship for gold in these societys. If you think we love gold then you ain't seen nothing until you go there. Turkey at the time pretty much produced nothing and imported nothing and the Lira was basically toilet paper and I see not much better now. The "rich" Turks might be a barracks house boy or even a cook that had access to $USD, which they would horde for gold. Either bullion or jewelry.

Think of it ? A 50yo barracks house boy paid $1 USD to shine a pair of shoes or press a uniform would secretly be the richest family on the block. Of course they'd have to grease a few connections to get such a spot, monthly, but they had access to both Yankee $USD and black market "bush-bush" goods like American smokes, fruit of the looms, Levis.....ect. And the end currency that would be at the end of it all would be gold. Generational gold is what made you rich in such a place. It always was and always will be "worshiped" in a way were only beginning to understand. The $USD was only the script used to buy the gold.

And the reason so many cousins marry cousins in these societies is to keep the wealth inside the family in some way, IE, the Gold.

Takes a pound of gold to marry a cousin in Turkey. Two pounds if she has a moustache like Rollie Fingers.
