The Civilizational Idea

What is the difference between a state, be it a republic or a monarchy or some other, just a run of the mill state, where people work, live, do economics, conduct state craft and war and blink in and out of history, and a civilization? The number of states, mostly petty kingdoms, princedoms and little republics, like the various ones that littered the Hellenistic world, is almost countless. In its own way it is countless, as many hundreds are, for one reason or another, lost to history.
Opposed to that is the relatively small number of civilizations or to be more particular, civilizational states. Even now, in our modern world, there is only a handful of such states: the US, EU, Russia, India and China. Depending on whom you ask, one may also add Iran to that list. The rest of the statelets are either part of one of these civilizations, either fully or partially, or are irrelevant in the greater scheme of things.
But that again begs the question: what is the difference between a civilizational state and just a state? The answer to this complex question is quite simple: the Civilizational Idea(s) that it bares.
In 1959, the American National Exhibition came to the Soviet Union. Three million soviet citizens saw an American house full of appliances and “modern” technology. The goal of this was to sell the “American Dream”, which was at that time and continued to be to the 90s or later, the civilizational idea of America. True, it was one that reached its peak in the 50s and 60s, due to the effects of WW2 and post war recovery. Equally true that this idea was becoming more and more hollowed out until all pretense of it was dropped. Except for some foreigners who naively still hold to the image that Hollywood cultivates, few in the middle classes of America still hold any hope out for this dead and rotting non-reality.
The new idea that has been fully fleshed out by this administration, in such documents as the Donroe Doctrine is one of Might Makes Right for the Hegemon. In other words, internal issues and the desires of the people be damned, the Empire must grow and control everything and International Law will not get in our way, nor the complaints or desires of the common people.
In all of this, a second Civilizational Idea has been forming in the so called West, which has never been nearly as unified or uniform as it has presented itself. In this case, it has belonged to the elites of the EU and its captive statelets, formerly nations. While the theoretical foundation was already formed, it was the Covid Epidemic and the Conflict in Ukraine with its Red…er…Russian scare that helped solidify this Civilizational Idea and the tyrannical government that enforces this.
The idea is one of pure woke liberalism, where everything and anything goes, as long as its anti-Christian, anti-Traditional, anti-Family and most of all anti-Cultural of any of the indigenous cultures of the captive states of the EUSSR. This is the forced creation of the European Androgynous “Man”. All the worst of the failed Soviet model, in control and rebuilding of the “Soviet Man” with none of the good things, such as attempts at equality, high levels of education, a high quality life for the workers and so on.
This Civilizational Idea, of course, is fully a top down construction and while some levels of society do support it, the voices of protest only grow. To that end, the manner of governorship, already of an unelected commission, is becoming and will continue to become more drastic and more brutal. It has come to this more slowly than the blitzkrieg of the original EU 1.0, that is Hitler’s New European Order, but it is coming to it no matter what. This model can only hold by the brutal and total suppression of anything that smells of nationalism, patriotism or love of God, Land or Family.
Equally, Russia has had several Civilizational Ideas over its long history. During the early knyaz (prince and principality) period, the principality of Moscowvy was but one of many Russian principalities fighting and growing and shrinking and so on, as any petty state would do. It was not until the wedding of Zoe Palaiologos, niece of the martyred last emperor of Byzantine Constantine XI, that Moscowvy gained the civilizational idea of the Third Rome. Its civilizational idea, upon which it built first the Tsardom of Russia and than the Russian Empire, was that of the final major stronghold of Orthodox Christianity and the mission to unifying the Russian lands and than restoring Orthodoxy, in essence, Defender of the Faith.
Post Empire, the Soviets built their civilizational idea first upon World Proletariat Revolution and than, under Stalin, Socialism in One Nation, as well as equality of the working classes. In the post Soviet period, Russia floundered, it lacked a Civilizational Idea and to enforce that, the US State Department co-written constitution forbade a government ideologue. A nation without ideologue, that is, a Civilizational Idea, is just a state. As just a state, the Russian Federation floundered, running from crisis to crisis and even as things began to even out, it lacked the driving force to be more than a side show of the EU and greater Western sphere.
All of this began to change in the early 2010s and was spurred on even more by the Ukrainian Crisis, the overthrow of the Yunikovich government by the Americans and the start of a civil war against the Russians in the east by a new Nazi elite in Kiev. Whether the government of Putin and the Russian elites wanted it or not, they were thrust into the middle of this. To make things even more complicated, Russian citizens, volunteers poured into the Donbass to defend fellow Russians. Many of these men were veterans of the Balkan wars, where they fought in support of the Serbs.
In essence, the Russian Civilizational Idea had been birthed, even if the government did not yet know it or acknowledge it. By 2022 it had reached its adolescence and in the four years of the conflict in Ukraine, has fully matured. While not returning fully to the Defender of the Faith and the Third Rome of old, Russia has taken something of both that epoch and that of the Soviets and mixed it.
The new Russian Civilizational Idea is based on 1. Russia being a civilization separate from the rest of Europe and not really part of Asia, a Nation-Civilization. 2. It is the defender of the old European values, what ever those are, but in truth, it is a defender of old Russian values: God (though not overtly mentioned as Russia is officially a secular state), Family and Nation. In a word or two: Conservatism and Traditionalism coupled with a desire to grow internally and work with other states for a common economic good. There is no drive to remake the world in its image and interfere in the internal affairs of other nations. However, there is a strong desire to defend what is its, what belongs to the Russian World and simultaneous grow the common good, aka BRICS+.
As such, this Civilizational Idea is in direct confrontation with that of the Americans: Might Makes Right of the Hegemony and EUers: All Liberal and Woke Globalism All the Time. Conflict between these three is inevitable. And worse yet for the two Western Civilizational Ideas is that there is still the Chinese and Indian Civilizational Ideas to deal with, especially the Chinese, which equally stands in opposition to the two Western models.
The Clash of Civilizations is on.
What is the difference between a state, be it a republic or a monarchy or some other, just a run of the mill state, where people work, live, do economics, conduct state craft and war and blink in and out of history, and a civilization?
