Russia’s communist leader suggested seizing part of citizens’ bank deposits — now ‘everyone is thinking about how to get their money out’

The Russian Economy “Is An Illusion” Built On Debt: With the current energy crisis already wreaking havoc on Russia’s economy, a banking crisis may soon erupt as a mountain of debt weighs on consumers and businesses due to bad lending practices.

Fortune magazine wrote that the Kremlin urged banks to approve and even encouraged millions of Russians to take out three or more loans simultaneously.

But lenders are now vulnerable amid soaring indebtedness and deteriorating loan quality, while consumers buckle under high inflation.

Factbox: Fuel shortages and sales restrictions across Russia

MOSCOW, July 16 (Reuters) - Russians have felt the pinch of fuel shortages across the country's 11 time zones as Ukrainian attacks on oil refineries disrupt supply, leading to long queues at pump stations, excessive gasoline prices and rationing in several regions.

Some measures, such as clearing a low-quality fuel for use and increasing imports, have led to an improvement in access to fuel, especially in Moscow, while the situation in Russian-annexed Crimea remains tense.

Putin went to Beijing asking for the one pipeline deal Russia desperately needs — Xi received him like an emperor and sent him home

Beijing Is Preparing for Putin’s Death, Engaging with His Potential Successors: The PRC was once highly dependent on Russia for most of what made it a world power. But in 2026, not only does the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) General Secretary Xi Jinping feel no need to ingratiate himself with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but he and the other top leaders in Beijing are openly planning for what they will be demanding from Moscow once former KGB Lt. Col. Putin is dead or is deposed – or both.

For months, the queues at petrol stations across Russia have grown longer.

Now, two people have died.

An 80-year-old man suffered heart failure while waiting to fill his tank at a petrol station in the town of Lysva in Perm Krai, while a 75-year-old man died while waiting to refuel in Petrozavodsk.

Fuel crisis, attacks in Azov Sea tighten squeeze on Russian farmers

ROSTOV REGION, Russia, July 17 (Reuters) - Vladimir Fedorchenko and his wife Lyubov are expecting a good harvest this year on their farm in southern Russia, and yet the couple are worried.

A nationwide fuel crisis - the result of months of Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries - has caused a spike in the price of the diesel they need for their tractors and harvesters. And their workers, Vladimir says, are "queuing for half a day" just to fill up their cars so they can get to the farm.

Russians turn to cash, putting more strain on slowing wartime economy

Russians are returning to cash, as mobile internet shutdowns disrupt card payments, and more businesses seek to dodge tax under mounting financial pressure more than four years into the war with Ukraine.

Russia has added 1.56tn roubles (£14.8bn; $20bn) in cash into circulation since the start of the year - the biggest rise for the equivalent period in any year outside the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Central Bank figures analysed by the BBC.

The spike comes amid a wave of Ukrainian drone attacks, which have repeatedly led the Kremlin to shut down mobile internet across large swathes of the country, leaving many unable to pay by card. The government says the aim of the shutdowns is to counter the drone strikes.
