Long time ago, a pro-2nd-A writer put it on a scale, 1 to 5, of how a person should be paying attention.

Level 1, is in a completely-controlled situation. You're asleep, or chillin' with no need or concern. Very seldom should a person in a stressed situation - and that's most situations, today, with so many bad actors - very rarely can you safely assume that level of awareness.

Level 2, is taking the effort to be aware of your environment. That is where the person in control should be. Watching - not aggressively, but with one eye. Train yourself to learn for triggers to pay close attention - body language, clothes that don't fit; orchestrated movements - three actors entering a public room, moving quickly to positions they know they want.

Level 3 is, your head on a swivel. There is risk. You're scoping it out. Who's an actor, who's a possible ally; who is in the way and who or what might be a target? Plan escapes - for your party and yourself. Have a second plan if you have to fight to leave, or need (or can) to defend innocents.

Level 4 is, ready to take a stand. Fight or flight? Can you diffuse the situation with an assertive warning? Is cover the best move, or assertion?

Level 5, is, weapon drawn, taking aim.

Hummm. When I'm not inside my home I always seem to be on level 3.
Well...I just revert to the Rules of the West.

--Never eat at a place called "Mom's."

--Never play cards with a man named "Doc."

--And never, ever, take into your bed, a woman crazier than you are.

Violate any of these at your own peril.

EDIT: I misread your post. I read it that you were at Level 3 WHEN INSIDE the home.

Your woman looking to kill you. My bust...
