Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest retreat destroyed in fire
the Guardian

Fire.jpg

About 200 firefighters were deployed on Friday night to tackle the blaze at the Nazi dictator’s remote, purpose-built Kehlsteinhaus residence, a protected building on the peak of Obersalzberg in southern Germany. Flames rose high into the air as firefighters approached the scene to find the building “completely ablaze”, police said.

The building is only accessible via a road cut into the mountain through previously impassable terrain. Nazis would enter a tunnel and take a 124-metre brass lift buried in the mountain to get inside the building. Efforts to fight the fire were hampered by a strong wind and rain, which turned into the year’s first snow, and firefighters had to pull out overnight after several hours. A police spokesperson: “It is damaged to a large extent. The house is unlikely to be saved.”

The Eagle's Nest Fire - Erasing History at Obersalzberg

Oct 25, 2026
The burning down of the Eagle's Nest is a great loss to history, but it is only the most recent example in the last 80 years of efforts to remove traces of Hitler from his former mountain home despite good arguments to preserve buildings to help educate future generations about the Nazi period and the Allied victory in 1945. Strong debate has raged in Germany over the issue of Nazi-era buildings, and the case of the Eagle's Nest will cause a new round of debate and soul-searching over the question of restoration or demolition of this important historical site.
