Onslow County towing company settles with Justice Department after service members cars towed and sold​

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - The United States Department of Justice announced on Wednesday that they had settled with an Onslow County towing company that they say violated the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) by towing and then selling vehicles without disclosing to the court that they were owned by servicemembers.

Justice Department officials filed a complaint on March 3 that claims that Goines Towing & Recovery, which is located near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, had auctioned off, sold, or otherwise disposed of motor vehicles owned by eight servicemembers in violation of the SCRA.

Officials say that the SCRA provides a wide variety of financial and housing protections to members of the military.

Actually, it's a government problem.

It lies in the way cities have contracts with towing companies - and how they license and regulate them.

And they do. Regulate them. As honestly and as fairly as any city bidding system is regulated.

Who the police call, when something goes awry, depends on contracts or agreements. There's money in them-thar wrecks...in those abandoned cars, illegal parkings, blocked driveways. The towing company gives a lowball bid, and agrees on rules: Speed of response, size of vehicles to be removed (not every tow truck can tow a Class 8 tractor-trailer). How much the city will pay - in some cases, next to nothing; but the towing company has the prerogative to store the towed vehicle against an incomprehensible daily storage charge.

So, the police call a tow truck, and the owner pops out to move it. What then? The rules are, if the car is hooked up for tow, it's getting towed. Not yet hooked? The owner can move it.

THAT means it's in the towing company's interest, to SNATCH it, FAST. The cops called them; let the cops worry about legality. The difference between a thousand dollars, towing and impound fees, and NOTHING, is right there.

So, yes. Mistakes are made. Because of the stylings of the city regulations and arrangements.

Yeah. And neither I nor the towing company I worked for, survived.

Let it suffice...there's a lot of backstage politicking and a lot of graft. Dale, the boss, wasn't getting rich...he bought the towing company to complement his repair garage; and what it turned out to be was the headache of headaches.

He wound up selling the towing company - the name, the book, the permits and the legal entity. He kept one of the trucks to do in-house towing for his repair customers.

And Dale could have used the money. It just wasn't there for him - perhaps because he didn't have the time to cultivate $$political contacts$$.

"Super Heavy" Container Roll Over at the Ports. Back at it again with that quality recovery content you have been craving! So sorry for all the fans who missed me and thanks for everyone who reached out. Literally nothing happened LOL, I just skipped a week for a trip to the mountains for Vday with the family. Between that and my crazy workload it was impossible to pump out a video to make it and you know I don't like to rush out junk content.
I'm caught up on a lot of projects at work so I should be able to resume 2 videos per week! This episode we have yet another container rollover, and we decided to use our infamous barrel roll technique to speed things up. This method is by far one of the best and when done right, looks insanely cool.
Factoring the clean up and waiting for the good tractor to be let in, the entire job was done in just minutes (40 or so to be exact). Let me know what you guys think as always! ‘Rampant’ tow truck scam targeting Southern California drivers, officials say​

Officials at the California Department of Insurance are warning Southland residents of a “vehicle hostage” scam involving tow truck companies targeting motorists involved in traffic accidents.

In a Tuesday news release, department officials said the scam, which bilks drivers out of large sums of money to get their vehicles back, has become rampant in Southern California.

Scammers towed Eaton fire victims’ cars, held them hostage for cash, authorities say​

Scammers are suspected of preying upon vulnerable Eaton fire victims by fraudulently towing their cars during the initial days of the devastating blaze and then demanding excessive fees to retrieve them, authorities said.

On Monday, L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger issued a statement urging any Altadena residents who were contacted by a tow company under suspicious circumstances to report their experience to the Inland Empire Automobile Insurance Fraud Task Force.
