Hiltzik: What does Trump have against Venezuela? His explanations keep changing

President Trump's geopolitical ambitions have almost been harder to follow than his other policies, encompassing as they have the annexation of Greenland, the conversion of Canada into the 51st state and the retaking of the Panama Canal.

Trump's current focus is on Venezuela, which has been led by the dictator Nicolás Maduro since 2013. Trump's moves against Maduro have been more aggressive than those against any other foreign target. They've encompassed attacks on Venezuelan boats in the Caribbean purportedly carrying drugs destined for the U.S., tankers carrying oil to China and other countries ostensibly in violation of international sanctions and the threat of military action.

Yet what has remained murky is what Trump views as the chief rationale for these actions. Over time, he has blamed Maduro for encouraging the flow of immigrants, including criminals, to the U.S. and for flooding the U.S. with narcotics. Last week, via his TruthSocial online platform he demanded "the return to the United States of America all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us."

Maduro: I’m ready to make a deal with Trump

Nicolas Maduro has said he is ready to strike a deal with Donald Trump as the US ramps up pressure on his regime.

The Venezuelan leader said he would open up the country to American oil companies and address anger in Washington about drug trafficking by clamping down on smugglers.

Mr Trump has deployed the largest military force in generations to the Caribbean and, since August, has struck what his administration claims are Venezuelan “narco-boats”, vessels laden with drugs headed to the US from the Caribbean.

Trump says Venezuela's Maduro captured after strikes

WASHINGTON, Jan 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. has struck Venezuela and captured its President Nicolas Maduro, who has been taken out of the country, President Donald Trump said on Saturday.

The U.S. has not made such a direct intervention in Latin American since the invasion of Panama in 1989 to depose military leader Manuel Noriega.

Can Iraq come into the US and steal the President to get their gold returned?
I'm also curious as to whom that oil belonged to in the tanker we took. Once those tankers leave port it belongs to whomever bought it.

Why Nicolás Maduro Faces Criminal Charges in the U.S.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called Mr. Maduro, the Venezuelan leader who faces narco-terrorism charges, a “fugitive from American justice.”

Oct. 1, 2025

Trump administration officials seeking to remove Nicolás Maduro as the leader of Venezuela have been citing a federal indictment returned half a decade ago in Manhattan as one justification.

The indictment, by a grand jury in March 2020 during President Trump’s first term, charges Mr. Maduro in a decades-long narco-terrorism and international cocaine trafficking conspiracy, and accuses him of overseeing a violent drug cartel as he rose to lead the South American nation. The United States is offering a $50 million reward for his capture.

The United States does not recognize Mr. Maduro as Venezuela’s president, but the decision to indict a putative head of state was unusual, representing an escalation of the Trump administration’s efforts to pressure Mr. Maduro to leave office.

Listened to T's speech a short while ago. We (the US) will be running Venezuela for the time being. Wonder how that'll play out?

Also wondering what our allies and the rest of the world honestly thinks about the US now?

During the U.S. attacks on Venezuela they reportedly also struck an Iranian factories producing Shahed drones. The Islamic republic has used Venezuela as a South America base thanks to Maduro for many years. Venezuela has also been used as a money laundering playground for the regime with hundreds of millions (if not billions) being laundered through Caracas. Khamenei has reason to worry after this decisive action from the United States.

🇺🇸🇻🇪 INSIDE OPERATION ABSOLUTE RESOLVE: HOW DELTA FORCE GRABBED MADURO

This wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision.

The operation to capture Nicolás Maduro, code-named Operation Absolute Resolve, had been planned for months with a core team that included Stephen Miller, Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe holding regular meetings with Trump.

Delta Force built an exact replica of Maduro's safe house and rehearsed the raid repeatedly.

The CIA placed a small team on the ground in Venezuela starting in August to track his movements.

They also had an asset close to Maduro who could pinpoint his exact location when the operation launched.

The Pentagon quietly moved massive firepower into the Caribbean: an aircraft carrier, 11 warships, over a dozen F-35s, refueling tankers, drones, and electronic jamming aircraft.

More than 15,000 troops poured into the region under the cover of anti-drug operations.

Trump approved the mission 4 days ago, but military planners asked him to wait for better weather and less cloud cover.

At 10:46 PM EST yesterday, he gave the final go-ahead.

Over 150 aircraft launched from 20 bases across the Western Hemisphere, including F-35s, F-22s, and B-1 bombers, striking air defense systems around Caracas.

Trump watched the live stream from Mar-a-Lago as Special Forces flew into the capital at low altitude under heavy fire.

One helicopter took a hit but kept flying. Residents posted videos of the convoy.

The troops brought blowtorches to cut through steel doors.

When they breached Maduro's "fortress," he tried to reach a panic room but "got bum rushed so fast" he couldn't close the door.

He and his wife surrendered to Special Forces and FBI agents inside.

As they left Venezuelan territory, multiple firefights erupted.

By 3:20 AM, helicopters were over water with Maduro blindfolded and handcuffed.

7 hours later, Trump posted a photo of him aboard the USS Iwo Jima.

Miami is celebrating for sure. Colombia, Mexico and Cuba were put on notice too. No effing around now.

I think what pushed Trump over the edge was when he found out Venezuelans use some kind of weird cheese instead of mozzarella on their pizza. They also put oddball ham and pineapple on it too. It's not very good. Brazil and Cuba have better food.

They cannot possibly think any less of us than when we had a child-sniffing dementia patient as President who couldn't even read words off a teleprompter without spouting complete gibberish and would literally get lost trying to walk off a stage.
