Trump is furious at China, but he’s making US foes great again​

President Donald Trump is mad that China is palling around with his strongmen friends.

Trump erupted on social media late Tuesday night — US time — as television footage aired of Chinese leader Xi Jinping hosting the authoritarian leaders of Russia and North Korea at a stunning military parade in Beijing.

“Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United States of America,” Trump wrote in a message to Xi.

The Truth Social post heard around the world means one thing: If China’s two big gatherings of authoritarian leaders, US adversaries and erstwhile allies this week was intended as a personal affront to the US president, it worked perfectly. And it underscored the futility of his attempts to subject the true global hard men to his art-of-the-deal charms and his claims that his supposedly close relationships with such leaders can be decisive.

China sends veiled warning to US​

China‘s top military official struck a hawkish tone at Beijing’s premier defense conference on Thursday, issuing a pointed warning against a world ruled by the “law of the jungle” in a thinly veiled swipe at the United States.

Why It Matters​

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun delivered the keynote address at the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, the country’s most prominent annual defense gathering, attended by defense officials, scholars, and observers from more than 100 countries, including the U.S.

Dong’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions between Beijing and Washington, with the two sparring over issues ranging from Taiwan and the South China Sea to U.S. alliances and military deployments in the Asia-Pacific.

The United States Needs a Global War Plan for China​

If China were to begin a war against Taiwan as soon as 2027 and the United States decides to mount a regional response, the United States would lose.1 It would lose not because of China’s advances in hypersonic missile technology, its advantage in drone numbers, or the loss of U.S. intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, although these factors would play a significant part in any future conflict. The United States would lose because it anticipates a Taiwan contingency that remains regional, playing out on the maritime “field” China has deliberately chosen.2

Many navalists expect a Sino-American conflict would take place largely in and near the Taiwan Strait, with auxiliary theaters in other areas of the western Pacific, including the South China Sea. In recent wargames, hypothetical battles too often read like a modern iteration of War Plan Orange, the pre–World War II plan in which U.S. fleets drove west across the western Pacific to seek a decisive oceanic clash with the Imperial Japanese Navy.3 Such scenarios range wide in tactical creativity and ingenuity but are strategically misguided.

China says US will only 'harm itself' after Washington approves $11 billion arms sale to Taiwan​

The U.S. on Thursday approved $11.15 billion in arms sale to Taiwan, reportedly its largest deal to the island as it faces growing threats from China and has been a subject of diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Tokyo.

The move drew a sharp response from Beijing, with its foreign affairs spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, accusing the U.S. of violating the "one-China principle."

1,500 U.S. Marines and Japanese Troops to Train on First Island Chain Defense Next Month​

The U.S. Marine Corps and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s (JGSDF) bilateral exercise “Iron Fist 26” will see approximately 1,550 troops carry out amphibious landings, air assaults and more across Japan’s southwest region next month.

Spanning Feb. 11-March 9, Iron First 26 will take place on military installations and training areas across Okinawa, a critical island in the strategic chokepoint between Japan and Taiwan, according to Tuesday news releases from the JGSDF and Japan Ministry of Defense The annual joint exercise originally began in 2006 and was held at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., but the exercise was moved in 2023 to southwest Japan as part of a U.S. effort to deter conflict in the region.

This year’s exercise will involve training for joint command operation, amphibious landings, air assaults, target designation for close air support, waterfront obstacle clearance, ground obstacle clearance, logistics, medical and communications across two separate phases of training.
