Deportations to Add Almost $1 Trillion in Costs to the “Big Beautiful Bill”​

The House of Representatives recently passed its budget reconciliation spending bill, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1). The bill changes numerous aspects of tax and spending law, but its most significant spending increases are for immigration. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the bill will direct an astounding $168 billion of the budget to immigration and border law enforcement, and there is even more for agencies that indirectly support immigration law enforcement.

However, the CBO’s cost estimate is deficient in three ways. First, CBO assumes that all this increase is temporary, and second, it will happen gradually over the next 10 years, rather than in an immediate, reckless spending spree. Most importantly, it neglects the more significant cost of removing immigrants who would have paid more in taxes than they received in benefits. Properly considered, the actual cost of H.R. 1’s immigration enforcement spending is nearly $1 trillion more than the CBO estimates. When seen in the context of the overall costs of the bill, mass deportation would account for almost a quarter of the bill’s total price tag.

No, it is not "most importantly". Illegal immigrants should not be here. Government should not be a profit making entity, but something we pay to enforce our laws (and other things.) It is a cost.

Should a court refuse to prosecute a petty shoplifter because the court costs are greater than the theft?
If a man murders someone disabled or retired and getting large payments from the government, should the murder be excused because it saves government money?
 

Senate Republicans Plan to Release Major Revisions to Trump’s Tax Bill​

(Bloomberg) -- Senate Republicans intend to propose revised tax and health-care provisions to President Donald Trump’s $3 trillion signature economic package this week, shrugging off condemnations of the legislation by Elon Musk as they rush to enact it before July 4.

The Senate Finance Committee’s plan to extract savings from the Medicaid and — perhaps — Medicare health insurance programs could depart in key respects from the version of the giant bill that narrowly passed the US House in May. The release of the panel’s draft will likely touch off a new round of wrangling between fiscal conservatives and moderates.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday said he regretted some of the social media posts he made about U.S. President Donald Trump last week during an explosive public dispute with his former close ally.

The feud dissolved a tight partnership that had propelled Musk to spearhead the budget-slashing Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under Trump’s second administration, fueling market concerns over the outlook for the tech tycoon’s Tesla and SpaceX businesses.

Musk’s Tesla saw its biggest ever hit to its market cap in the aftermath of the feud, but shares have since been recouping losses.

Senate GOP slashes megabill's tax costs with new accounting method​

Tax legislation recently unveiled by Senate Republicans only costs $441 billion when tallied using a novel accounting method requested by the GOP.

The new estimate by the Joint Committee on Taxation, which was released late Saturday night, shows how Senate Republicans were able to slash the costs of sweeping tax legislation set to be included in the GOP's sweeping megabill by using a "current policy baseline" — a never-before-used technique that wipes out the cost of extending existing tax cuts that are set to expire at year's end.

Senate bill hastens end of wind, solar tax credits and imposes new tax​

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The latest version of the Senate's massive budget bill that the Senate is racing through for a vote as soon as Saturday deals a fatal blow to the use of tax credits in place since 2005 to spur more wind and solar energy and would set a new tax on those projects for the first time, renewable energy proponents said on Saturday.

Despite hopes earlier in the week that the Senate would rework the budget megabill's language about the future use of Inflation Reduction Act tax credits to extend their use and make them more usable, the new version of the bill introduced by Senate leadership overnight will effectively repeal the incentives for solar and wind immediately.

Instead, it imposes a new tax on wind and solar projects completed after Dec. 31, 2027 if they cannot prove they have not used any Chinese components, while offering a new tax break for coal production.

Senate Narrowly Advances Trump’s Tax and Spending Megabill​

WASHINGTON—The GOP-controlled Senate voted late Saturday to advance President Trump’s tax-and-spending megabill despite two Republican defections, narrowly clearing one procedural hurdle and offering a stark preview of the difficulties party leaders face in passing the sprawling measure.

The initial vote on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was 51-49, with most Republicans in favor and all Democrats opposed, putting the Senate potentially on track to pass the bill by Monday after a day of debate and amendments. GOP Sens. Rand Paul (R., Ky.) and Thom Tillis (R., N.C.) broke with their party to vote against advancing the bill. The revised text of the 940-page Senate bill was released late Friday night and is likely to keep changing.

Trump wants the bill passed by the Senate and the House and on his desk by a self-imposed deadline of July 4.
