Been there several times. Parts of CR are breathtakingly beautiful. The traffic in and around San Jose is maddening though.
 
Lake Arenal is awesome and the clearest lake water I have ever seen. In addition, I noticed the conspicuous absence of mosquitoes at altitude, which more than made up for the abysmal roads we drove over to get there. The food is phenomenal, although be ready to take your time. In Costa, meals are to be savored not slammed.
