S&P 500 ekes out narrow gain as investors shake off Fed’s inflation warning: Live updates​

The S&P 500 posted a modest gain on Wednesday as traders assessed the potential for future Federal Reserve rate cuts amid persistent inflationary pressures.

The broad market index added 0.16%, closing at 5,918.25, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.06% to 19,478.88. The Dow Jones Industrial Average outperformed, rising 106.84 points, or 0.25%, to end at 42,635.20. The three major averages are on pace for a second straight weekly loss.

They highlighted the rising consumer demand for organic and healthy food as a potential opportunity for farmers to pivot towards more profitable crops, while emphasizing the need for a stronger local food movement and regional economies to facilitate this transition. Reisinger pointed out that the traditional food system is struggling to provide affordable food due to rising prices and supply chain vulnerabilities, worsened by the concentration of food production.

He noted that technology could either support small farmers or marginalize them further, advocating for scale-neutral technology that benefits farms of all sizes. Reisinger concluded with optimism about the potential for nearly 2 million small family farms to succeed if provided with appropriate entrepreneurial opportunities.

Stock futures slipped Monday as key tech shares that have led the bull market continued to be dumped by investors.

S&P 500 futures dropped 0.8% while Nasdaq 100 futures shed 1.2%. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 150 points, or 0.4%. All three benchmarks are down for the last two weeks with tech shares causing most of the damage.

Wall Street Week Ahead​

The first full trading week of the year will be a busy one for Wall Street.

Inflation will be front-and-center, with the December 2024 producer and consumer price reports scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. The economic calendar will also see the Fed Beige Book on regional U.S. economic activity, and the retail sales update for December 2024.
