Well, those American sanctions have caused a lot of poverty in Cuba now, and the upper 1% were really wealthy while most lived in abject misery.
I do hope the people in Cuba can figure out a new democracy.
Were they, really? I don't have the stats in front of me...but my general observations of People's Revolutions for Collectivism, tells me that the real suffering, the dependence on the USSR, fer-chrissake...didn't start until Castro started "fixing" the economy.

Don't confuse actual suffering, with uncontrolled (and often ginned-up) envy.
