Eastern europeans steal chewing gum for currency

Gangs of Eastern Europeans are stealing chewing gum from supermarkets because it can be used as currency in their home countries.

Packs are being stolen in bulk before taking it home where it has a tangible value as currency - particularly in Romania where it often given as change in shops.

There was an article in the Mises Daily section a few years back from a man who served in the current phase of the Iraq war. He described how, as the Saddam regime was coming unglued, the people in a town he was in were using goats, bottled water, and cigarettes as currency.

All of which are more valuable than a piece of paper...
