Episode 15 : The Last Days of Little Italy / "The Ladies of Little Italy" (New York City Short Film)

Mar 7, 2025 #nyc #newyork #littleitaly

The Last Days of Little Italy: An Original Documentary Series.
Little Italy, a historic haven for immigrant families from the old country, was once threatened by an ever-expanding Chinatown. But now the fatal blow is being delivered by the gentrifiers. Corporations, yuppies, and chain stores all moved in. How did Little Italy transform itself from a working class neighborhood of tenement buildings to the third most expensive zip code in the United States?
Part funny, part sad, the series explores the impact gentrification is having on Little Italy's long-term residents. The striking imagery captures the neighborhood before it is completely erased by sterile trendy stores and upper middle class sameness.
Will New York City lose another cultural touchstone to the forces of greed?

Once other whites decided Italians were white, the little Italy ghettos were doomed. Now, where do I get good cannolis...?

I think every one of us does.

I still have evidence of the old tech, everywhere. I have a landline phone - tucked away in a box, in case yesterday comes back. And I just threw out a stash of old VHS tapes - it would cost more to transcribe them than to just re-buy the movies. Although I have some home-made VHS tapes I'd like to see again, to decide if I want to keep them. Remember, recording them, once you had the cam-corder, was free - a lot of stupid crap went on them, and a lot of poor judgment.

I still have several mp3 players. I draw the line at subscribing to streaming services. NOT HAPPENING.

CD's and DVD's are a buck or two at the fleamarket, burn to computer, then on to phone and tablet....

Yeah, I do that regularly, when I'm bored.

I have a full bookshelf of movies I'm gonna watch someday...but not the same ones I threw out. At a second-hand sale, you get Hobson's Choice.

Weird (But Cool) Car Features That NEVER LASTED!

The cars we drive have always been an important part of who we are. Think about the old cars you’ve owned and some of the features that made those cars unique. Car companies have experimented with new ideas, some good and some bad. So, let’s take a look back at some of the weird car features that never lasted.

I had a family photo album open the other day and was reminiscing about the good old days way back in March when gold was under $3k.

NOW ILLEGAL, But Normal in 1950s

Apr 18, 2025

The 1950s are considered to be an idealized time for many. This was before regulations and restrictions were put into place in the name of safety or sometimes decency. Looking back, it does seem like the wild west when it comes to what we were allowed to do. So, let’s revisit many of the things that were normal during the 1950s, that are now illegal.

Yeah. I lived through the 1980s. As a young man.

The first years of the decade were hard, but there was no denying: Men were still mostly men, and women were women - even if dealing with Big Hair. Dallas was a big television draw - not fat lesbians with purple hair, and whatever other opposite-reality troupe they're pushing, now. I won't watch television, now.

It was exactly 35 years after the previous Fourth Turning, 1945. Just into the second saeculum (as Strauss and Howe put it). We had 45 years to go, and so far to fall.

I remember those years.

A lot of states' NG units got "volunteers" to get out of that. The Navy, also - better to volunteer for the Navv, then be drafted to kill <redacted - see forum guidelines on epithets>s.

Later, after I got out of high school myself, I found myself working with a small group of such veterans. One was infantry in the front lines, and had PTSD. And nearly strangled me, when he snapped.

Another was a truck mechanic in Saigon. He thought Vietnam was great - like war comedies. Any time he was too hanged over to work, he'd get under a truck and bang the muffler or driveshaft with a wrench. Everyone left him alone, when he'd do that.

Strange times...but then, right now is a strange time, too. Some things never change.

Almost half of my bootcamp company was Navy Reserves. Wanted to be sure they didn't get drafted.

Baby Boomers Considered These Luxuries

In the 1970s and 1980s, certain luxuries set households apart, signaling success, comfort, or just a touch of class. Some might call these things status symbols, but they were truly a reflection of a generation. So let’s take a look back in time at what Baby Boomers considered luxuries.

Sharing Some Nostalgia - From Humble Beginnings

May 5, 2025

Take a walk down memory lane with me as I visit my mom's childhood home in Omaha, Nebraska! Growing up with 11 siblings in a two-bedroom, one-bathroom house, my mom’s story is one of resilience, family, and unforgettable experiences. From tales of potato chip dust meals to childhood mischief and the challenges of growing up dirt poor, this house was the foundation of so many incredible memories.

I also share some fascinating family stories, including my dad’s wild journey to California, his run-ins with the law, and how their humble beginnings shaped their lives. This trip was emotional, inspiring, and a reminder of the rich history that connects us all.

Do These Outdated Baby Boomer Habits Need a Comeback?

May 9, 2025
Technology has changed just about everything—but not for everyone. In this video, we’re taking a fun and nostalgic look at the everyday habits Baby Boomers still hold onto, even as the world moves full speed into the digital age. These routines may seem outdated to some—but for Boomers, they’re a way of life.

^^^^^

The habits are not coming back - not before the Hard Reset.

Which will put us, not in the 1800s, but in Medieval times. IMHO, of course.

I'm dealing with this. My old firewall/router got "obsoleted." An online "update" by my cable company to the modem, made it not work. So I bought a new Asus firewall/router...and to make it work, get into the control page in the firmware, the only way is through a "smart" phone.

I don't WANT my phone, or any phone, in there! I'm not using it with a phone. I don't do money or financial data with a phone. I want to JUST SET UP THE FIREWALL.

Asus, with its Chinese Engrish, will not allow me to so do. The directions need translation. The step-by-step do NOT match what I find. It's worded illogically, incorrectly, terms confused...and I'm about to send this back to Amazon.

Go to Bust Bye and all I see are devices that give me eight Wi-Fi channels. I want NONE. I want a FIREWALL.

Because I'm a Boomer, and common sense is completely absent.

FWIW, in my truck, is a Rand-McNally MAP. A 50-state Street Atlas. PAPER. My phone can't be trusted - to give me directions or to keep things private.

MISSING Fixtures From Every American Hometown

May 30, 2025
There was a time when towns across America shared a certain rhythm — a slower, simpler pace filled with fixtures that made you feel connected to your community. But sadly they have quietly disappeared. So let’s take a look back at some of the fixtures of American hometowns — and what we miss most now that they’re gone.
