Yes, reverse osmosis (RO) effectively removes microplastics from water, with removal rates typically ranging from 90% to 99.9% based on multiple studies and sources. RO systems use a semi-permeable membrane with pore sizes as small as 0.0001 microns (0.1 nanometers), which is finer than most microplastics (generally defined as particles under 5 mm, or 5,000 microns, down to about 1 micron) and even many nanoplastics (under 1 micron). This allows the membrane to filter out these particles by forcing water through under pressure while rejecting contaminants into a waste stream.

Microplastic contamination has been a much-discussed topic over the last several years, but contamination from even smaller plastic particles represents another pressing issue. Nanoplastics—defined as being under a micrometer in diameter—may pose an even higher ecological risk because they can travel more easily, cross cellular membranes and easily adsorb other pollutants.
