Just as long as the shell doesn't protrude from the end of the barrel yer good to go.
Yah. I'd thought of a homemade Bang Stick - some sort of sleeve for a shotgun shell, set up with a firing mechanism that might be sprung when you press the business-end of this thing against a subject.
Now, a Bang Stick, according to what I'd read...is, or was, a shark-repellent weapon, the same thing. You arm it with a shotgun shell. A shark gets close, you stick the stick in its guts, and it goes off (underwater; I guess that does work, probably from air trapped in the shell) and the shark explodes in gore.
A bang stick on an animal or human target would leave about a four-inch hole of ground meat.
As to the other: Cut a shotgun, go to gaol. You never know when it might be seen - maybe you'll have a cop over for a home burglary. The burglar got some of your stacks, but left your gun. The cop sees your gun and calls the Feds - and their search rules are looser than those of your local PD.
I have the Mossberg pump gun, sold as home-defense...bought it in 2009. After buying it, I had the same thoughts - and measured the barrel. It was one inch longer than Federal minimums - and cutting it would have brought the muzzle too close to the pump/grip. Not worth it.
Something ELSE I learned, in an AR-15 instruction class this weekend...now, keep in mind, there's a lot of variations on the AR-15 theme. A number of makers. I have a pistol-calibre model, the Diamondback 9mm. Another classmate had a short-barrel lighter version, all possible extra weight removed.
As the weapons-expert teacher explained, the short barrel doesn't much change ACCURACY - it's gonna be about the same. What's lost is velocity - and the pressure, as the charge reaches the gas-vent and the barrel, sooner/closer than it would with a standard-length barrel. A long-distance shot would be affected, as it wouldn't have the punch.
Probably the same with a cut shotgun - except that since you're shooting, literally, shot, it's gonna scatter more.
That's the thing, no more tax stamps for SBS's , SBR's, and Suppressors, state laws may differ though.

My Mossberg, which now has a pistol-grip (right shoulder injuries)...I'd planned to use it that way.
I couldn't hit a large paper target even at 30 feet. I asked about a laser sight for a shotgun...all I got were laughs and snorts.
I tried to learn to fire, with a stock, left-handed. After two accidental discharges (fortunately, alone in a range-box with earthen sides and back) I gave THAT up.
Leveling a coach gun from the waist, and doing away with the bad guys....is the stuff of Hollywood.
Mossberg and Remingron both make AOWs which are essentially short barrelled shotguns with raptor grips. Buy one of those and keep the hacksaw away from the one you just bought. The only real advantage of the short barrel is looking like Rambo or being able to load extra rounds with overpriced short shells.
I have a12ga. 16" Turkish AR shotgun with 10 round mags unfired still in the box.i bought it at least 3 or 4 years ago for $200. It's built like a tank and would also make a deadly club.
I also have a single shot 20ga. Winchester which is 60+ years old and is a lot of fun to shoot.

I've also got a Mossberg 500 with the Knoxx Spec ops (recoil absorbing) pistol grip stock. I found it super easy to unload the full magazine at paper targets from short range.
I read somewhere once upon a time that most self defense shootings occur at about 10 feet. A long barrel makes hitting short range targets easy.
Gonna look into getting that Knoxx.
Also...a year ago, I remember, I dithered on carrying my Glock with me on that trip to Arizona. I'd planned the trip to be longer...well, I may resume that trip come this September.
At that time, a year ago, I decided to leave the Glock at home and take bear spray. Now, I have a van...not customized, but I'm reading of how Van-Life people keep disappearing. Basically along the Left Coast and also up and down the north-south corridor through Nevada and up my way.
Seems now, with the po-po inhibited in terms of what they can do, and undermanned...they've given up on meaningful routine patrols in rural areas. Maybe once a day...look for any stray bodies. But the bad guys, are now casing traffic...they see a van looking like it's set up for living, in a desolate area, they'll trail it.
That means arms are moar important than they were.
There's limits to carrying handguns, but the Gun-Grabbers haven't yet gotten to shotguns. I'm thinking of packing the Mossberg...as a modern coach gun. Blast a perp at ten feet. AND, no matching up a slug with the barrel....

Search for "knoxx specops stock mossberg" and you will find many vendors that carry it. I bought mine years ago. I didn't like the fore end, so I just installed the actual adjustable stock + pistol grip.

Already got one.
Good to know, because my gun-guy doesn't have access to it.
He knows of it, but none of his suppliers carry it. I was gonna email Bearcat...but I'll try this, also.
EDIT: I did the Brave Search, and the four known vendors, including Sportsman's Warehouse, are all OUT OF STOCK on this.
Seems it may have been discontinued. I'll email the company direct.

Went to the Blackhawk website...and what they have, are holsters and some "tactical stocks" that hold shells. Nothing about a recoil-free stock.
Prob BANNED...or they sold out, fearing a soon-to-come ban.
I'll check around the independent gunsmiths in town...but, every web lead that came up, even the ripoffs with $350-prices for it, show it OUT OF STOCK.
