NEW YORK (AP) — Is the year of Taylor Swift over now? Not yet.

Time magazine named Swift its person of the year on Wednesday, a week after Spotify announced she was the most-played artist on the streaming platform.

Swift was picked from a group of nine finalists that included Barbie, King Charles III, and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, among others.

I think she is amazing. She knows how to closely guard her brand image. She is incredibly savvy about public relations, investing, content design, etc. She shows a huge amount of discipline in how she maintains her beauty, and she has a tireless work ethic.

Give credit where credit is due.... in 2023 what one person had a greater impact on society?

Impact?

Of course, the man who garnered 81 million votes comes immediately to mind.
He's severely impacted all of us in the US and many across the globe.
I'm not saying it was in a good way, but he has still been quite "impactful".

Or even his son, you know "the smartest guy" Joe knows.

How about good ol' "I am the science" Dr Anthony Fauci?
Although 2023 wasn't really his playground. Maybe we can scratch him from the list.

But who can think of Fauci without thinking of his partner in crime, Bill Gates?

How about the Ukrainian comedian that the US propped up in a position of President of that country?
If you're gonna put Zelensky on the short list then you have to put his protagonist on their too, so let's drop in Putin.

You've got a whole slew of headline grabbers - there's Musk, Bezos, Jinping, and of course you can't forget good ol' Greta.

<SLV>, know that I'm not busting on you, just busting on the whole idea of a "person of the year" coming from the likes of Time magazine.

Time's person of the year....(*Yawn*) who cares?

I say "girl" advisedly. I've known young women in their teens; and I've seen, especially in urban liberal circles, girls of fifty. NEVER grew up. Still catting around as if in high school.

I couldn't name a single Taylor Swift song. But I have read a little about her (how could you not - she is everywhere). By all accounts, she is actually a pretty smart cookie. Good for her.

According to no less than Donald Trump, Paris Hilton is a smart cookie, too. But she got famous for being famous (and naked on a purloined video tape) and then for flashing photogs as she'd be stepping out of limos.

Madonna, they said, had brains, too. But all three of them, have been put/are putting themselves into settings where brains don't matter; where what matters, appearance, doesn't last; and the last laugh is the audience's, as Grandma Madonna tries to dance the koochie with a cast-iron brassiere.

I think Putin or any (or all) of his media people. Or Zelenskiy, if you want to add to the mix. But I do NOT consider Taylor Swift to be anything in the past or future. To me, she is equal to Menudo , the Backstreet Boys, or any other "boy band" created by a producer.

Agreed. In my opinion, music started to die in the 80's, but had some decent moments. And it was fully dead by 2000. Do you challenge me? Great! Show your evidence and prove me wrong! I eagerly await your evidence that 2000s music is good.

EDIT: I don't mean to challenge your post, CJ, just anyone who might disagree.

Imho, it and died and society in general took a turn for the worse when rock n roll quit being the prominent popular music.
 
I am obviously not the target audience anymore. I could give a rat's ass about Swift and her boyfriend from the Chiefs. A better choice would have been this chippie who told her old man he had to wait till later that nite to get laid.

She's 33 with a net worth of 1.1 billion. She's also an entertainer. Thats what she does for a living. What exactly would you like her to do with her brains?
Please tell us what you accomplished by the age of 33 and what you are doing with all your brain power.

Bill Gates was as rich at that age. Piggybacking on the work of others.

And look what Gates did with that loot.

Money en toto does not equal worth or value. All it equates to my jaded view, is there are bigger fools out there, with enough discretionary cash to be reckless with it.

I don't think of fading thirtysomething women singing the songs of adolescent girls, as smart. But that's just me. I don't think a lot of people shoved into public view are smart, no matter how much I'm told they are.

What is she doing with that money? Responsible investment? Warren Buffet started his firm with far less, even inflation adjusted. This one could try running a fiscally-conservative investment pool - or back one that is.

Or open a school for underserved young people who are not college material but who are very smart.

No, I was poor at age 33. Because I had a personality like battery acid (still do) and didn't have many Big Ideas. And if I had, I couldn't have sold them.

A guy I knew at age 18-20, he had the gift of gab, and by 33, he was a millionaire in real estate. Because he just oiled the friction of human interaction, and could get his prospects to sign the purchase orders....

A day later...someone moar astute than me, spotted Tay-Tay as a Pentagon asset and the center of another psy-op by government.

The claims by Fox News and far-right influencers that pop star Taylor Swift is part of a Pentagon “psychological operation” to get President Joe Biden reelected, and somehow rig the Super Bowl to benefit Kansas City Chiefs tight end (and Swift’s boyfriend) Travis Kelce, has been met with forehead slaps in the national security world.

“The absurdity of it all boggles the mind,” said one senior administration official, granted anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly on the matter. “It feels like one of those ‘tell me you are a MAGA conspiracy theorist, without telling me you are a MAGA conspiracy theorist’ memes.”

Let’s go back to December: A wild theory gained traction on far-right corners of social media after Swift was named Time magazine’s person of year on Dec. 6. Last month, Fox News host Jesse Watters did a segment about the idea, playing a clip from a NATO conference that he said backed up the theory that Swift was part of a Pentagon “psy-op,” or psychological operation, for combating online information.
