I don't think they were well-maintained, I think people just refused to walk on them, so they never saw any wear. I know that I would rather jaywalk than cross on the fairy stripe. Hell, I saw a video of a police horse refusing to step on one. I did enjoy the burnout videos, however. I found myself wishing my town council were retarded enough to put one in my town so I could "decorate" it with rubber, but in my town something like that wouldn't last the night. I was in Philly about two months, in the early 1990s - apart from horrific parking in most places, I didn't find it that bad. Of course I wasn't in the 'hood - our lodging was in a western suburb; the corporate offices were on Market Street. We were in training and orientation for Conrail - they centralized that aspect; everyone learned about trains right there in their controlled environment.
