Shutdown shortages: How chaotic will things get at US airports? | DW News

Nov 7, 2025 #AitTraffic #USshutdown #aviation
The US is bracing for travel chaos starting Friday, as transport authorities are set to reduce air traffic. Flights at 40 airports are due to be cut as the Federal Aviation Administration prepares to reduce capacity by up to 10 precent. They say it's needed to maintain safety, as air traffic controllers affected by the government shutdown are feeling the strain. Around 1.4 million federal employees are working without pay or on forced leave because Congress has been unable to agree a funding package.

Federal shutdown threatens these Trump voters’ livelihoods but not their political loyalties

Nov 8 - From federal paychecks to public benefits, the longest U.S. government shutdown in history is cutting lifelines for millions of Americans, many of whom voted for President Donald Trump.

But conversations with five Trump voters – part of a group of 20 whom Reuters has interviewed monthly since February – show that while the shutdown has disrupted their lives, it has not diminished their opinion of Trump’s performance as president.

Both Democrats and Republicans fear the political fallout from the shutdown. But Reuters' interviews with the panel of Trump voters show little change in pre-existing ideological divisions as a result of the shutdown.

First I've heard of this. Must say it sounds like it could spark some good discissions / dialog if the msm covers it.

Trump proposes multibillion-dollar handout to voters to end shutdown: ‘To the people!'

President Donald Trump made a stunning announcement Saturday in recommending that Congress sign off on a multibillion dollar payout directly to Americans as an alternative to funding government health care subsidies that have divided lawmakers amid the ongoing government shutdown.

“I am recommending to Senate Republicans that the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars currently being sent to money sucking Insurance Companies in order to save the bad Healthcare provided by ObamaCare, BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE SO THAT THEY CAN PURCHASE THEIR OWN, MUCH BETTER, HEALTHCARE, and have money left over,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

Lindsey Graham backs Trump's voter payout plan while complaining about working on weekend

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) opened a speech on the Senate floor Saturday by complaining about having to work on a Saturday, while also endorsing President Donald Trump’s proposal to take the billions of dollars earmarked for Obamacare and send them directly to Americans.

“So here we are on a Saturday… beautiful outside,” Graham mused as he opened his remarks on the Senate floor.

The Senate is working a rare Saturday session in an effort to bring about an end to the ongoing government shutdown, now in its 39th day, the longest shutdown in U.S. history. Graham, however, was apparently not pleased about the rare weekend work, but did voice full support for an unorthodox proposal floated by Trump earlier in the day.

Airport Disruptions May Get Worse This Week

The disruptions from federal restrictions on flying at the nation’s busiest airports were challenging, but relatively contained this weekend. But the cuts are expected to grow in the coming days, threatening to wreak havoc for airlines and travelers as Thanksgiving approaches.

The Federal Aviation Administration required airlines to cut flights by 4 percent at 40 busy airports starting on Friday to improve safety and relieve pressure on air traffic controllers who have worked without pay since the federal government shutdown began last month.

Airlines weathered those restrictions by making surgical cuts, but managing the disruption will become harder as the restrictions rise throughout the coming week to 10 percent by this Friday and possibly even higher.

From what I'm hearing we're almost there as far as the end of the shutdown. Maybe tonight........time will tell.

Airlines stocks are going to get hit tomorrow.

So the senate will vote on it today - that's a done deal. The house has to come back and vote on it. If T whistles they'll go along with it and the gov will reopen until January when another shut down is possible.

^^^^ Bernie is lying pos. (as usual)

There was no tax cut for the rich involved with this, at all.

If he wants the rich to pay more, he should lead by example and voluntarily double his own tax payments.

After all, he is in at least the top 2%, possibly 1%, of earners.

He IS the oligarchy he rails on and on about.

Bernie should lead by example and voluntarily double the amount HE pays in taxes, or stfu

With Congress poised to approve a bipartisan deal to end the longest-ever government shutdown in American history, President Donald Trump has turned his attention to attacking air traffic controllers for taking too much sick time while being forced to remain on the job without pay since the beginning of last month.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said the essential safety workers who ensure aircraft do not crash into each other while traveling through the nation’s airspace “must get back to work, NOW!!!”

He also threatened that any who fail to heed his demand would have their pay “substantially docked” while simultaneously promising that any controllers who remained on the job and did not take any sick time during the 41-day (and counting) lapse in appropriations would receive what he called a $10,000 bonus “for distinguished service to our Country.” That man has "Chutzpah"...

How much you wanna bet the big boys selling Junk Food were the real impetus to get Congress going? Can't have 40 million not buying their very poor quality food. Plus, they get a little Hangry.

Walmart and other big box stores count on SNAP to make up for poor wages, plus plenty of soldiers on snap too...

Deal to end US shutdown would also allow some Republican senators to seek $500,000 for January 6 probe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Legislation moving through Congress that would end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history would also allow eight Republican senators to seek hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages for alleged privacy violations stemming from the Biden administration's investigation of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

The bill, which passed the Senate on Monday, includes a clause that would allow lawmakers whose phone records were subpoenaed as part of that probe to sue the Justice Department for damages.

The legislation retroactively makes it illegal in most cases to obtain a senator's phone data without disclosure, and allows those whose records were obtained to sue the Justice Department for $500,000 per violation, along with attorneys' fees and costs. The Justice Department could opt to settle the lawsuits, rather than fight them in court.

Trump Signs Spending Bill, Ending Longest Shutdown in U.S. History

WASHINGTON—The GOP-led House passed a spending package reopening the government and President Trump signed it into law late Wednesday, drawing to a close a record-long 43-day shutdown driven by Democrats’ demands to extend expiring healthcare subsides.

The House approved the measure 222 to 209, largely along party lines, two days after the bill cleared the Senate.

President Trump signed it into law late Wednesday, drawing to a close a record-long 43-day shutdown driven by Democrats’ demands to extend expiring healthcare subsides.
They needed to expire, as the covid "emergency" is long over.

Makes no sense to keep pouring so much $$$ into programs that are no longer needed. (if it ever was needed)

Besides, the dems are ones who set this year as being the year when they were to expire.

If they wanted it to last longer, they should have set the expiry date further into the future when they enacted it in the first place.
.....but lets be honest. They were using this as a way to try to buy the votes of those obozocare recipients who would have gotten the benefits.

Bottom line is, the dems in power are scum of the Earth.

Gee Joe, that's a bit harsh
How so?

They were using people as bargaining chips.

There was never any legitimate reason for the gov to be shut.

The dems forced a shut down when it didn't have to happen.
....and did so purely for party reasons. Ie: dems are party over nation type of people.

It's still stupid, but I can understand a shut down due to a debt ceiling issue, as the gov is at that point prohibited from issuing the debt needed to pay it's bills.
Ie: the $$$ isn't there to pay for the gov to stay open, so it shuts.
....but this time it was 100% political theater on the part of the dems.

They voted to keep the gov shut, and then tried to claim it was the Republicans who were shutting the gov. You'd have be deaf dumb AND blind to not see that fact.

News flash! It was the "no" votes that shut the gov, not the "yes" votes.

Again, dem leadership are the scum of the Earth.

Let me help you Joe, "The politicians in power are the scum of the earth"...
