How these sellers of Swiss watches are coping with Trump’s highest tariffs

PHILADELPHIA — Switzerland is used to being alone. It’s not a member of NATO or the European Union; it eschews the euro in favor of its own currency, the Swiss franc, which has lately gained value against the euro and the dollar.

But Switzerland’s solitude has left it isolated by President Donald Trump’s import taxes. The multilingual Alpine nation faces the highest U.S. tariffs of any industrial country — a 39% tax on Swiss exports vs. 15% elsewhere in Europe.

Swiss high-end watchmakers, led by Rolex, Cartier’s Richemont, Omega’s Swatch, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe, face the full tariff rates on watches they send the U.S., the industry’s largest market. Altogether last year the 50 major Swiss watchmakers produced 16 million high-end watches, worth over $30 billion, down slightly from the record year 2023, according to a Morgan-Stanley research report.

MSLSD busy generating Fake Nooze, again.

Does ANYONE think the person purchasing a Rolex cares about price? He's buying it TO waste money - to FLAUNT that he can waste money. Nobody even needs a watch, anymore, now that everyone has StupeFones.

Before we did, we had Casio and Timex watches. $5.99 at Kmart. I think you can still get a few, guaranteed five years, at Wally World for $19.99.

A Rolex watch is supposed to radiate class. What it is, in fact, is open ostentation. Lookitt MEE...I got MONEYEEE...

That's the opposite of true class. A billionaire with class, you could stand beside, waiting for a light to cross the street, and never know. Only way you could tell is that he's probably reasonably trim and careful with his words.

When Buying Omega's Best Seamaster Diver Goes WRONG + Unboxing The Greatest Military Type 20 Watch

Today I unbox one of the greatest military chronographs of all time to add to my personal collection. I also share a second unboxing that turned into a buying failure as I continue my search for the ultimate James Bond era Omega Seamaster. But both of these were further than I got with my third attempt at purchasing a watch this month—an exciting release from Spaceone that seeks to reinterpret a complication I've been lusting after for a while, with their avant-garde WorldTimer. Join me as I also explore why the Vixa Type 20 watch is so important, as well as what went wrong with what should have been the most perfect and underrated Seamaster diver (ref. 2255.80.00 automatic, and ref. 2265.80.00 quartz) and why I ultimately could not pull the trigger on the Spaceone, but am hoping for a general release of Frederique Constant's 38mm Worldtimer following their limited edition collaboration with Watch Angels earlier this year. What do you think about the watches in this video? And have you had any watch buying disasters lately? Please share in the comments.

My New Grail Rolex Submariner: The Most Important Watch I Will EVER Own & A Gift From My Biggest Fan

Oct 10, 2025
Today, a once in a lifetime video and the culmination of a journey over a decade in the making. After a very difficult year, I share an unboxing of a truly unicorn Rolex Submariner that honors my biggest fan and greatest inspiration, who is terminally ill. In this very personal and bittersweet episode, I discuss why, if I could have any watch, I chose this extremely rare version of a reference 14060 over all the other choices. I also share how I got to this point after owning many Tudors, Omega Seamasters, and even why I chose it over vintage classics like the 5512, 5513, 1680 with date, or even Bluesy versions, and modern ceramic models. Naturally, you can't talk about this iconic dive watch without mentioning James Bond and the 007 influence, or how the Explorer had a little to do with it too. Join me as I say goodbye to one of the most important people in my life with a timepiece that goes even beyond grail watch status. Onwards and ever upwards.

For 30 years, Bacs (whose love of watches began as a teenager in Zurich) has sold luxury timepieces at the world's most celebrated auction houses. Over the past decade, he and his wife, Livia Russo, partnering with Phillips Auctioneers, have been responsible for $1.6 billion in watch sales, catering to thousands of collectors from around the world. Correspondent Mark Strassmann talks with the flamboyant Bacs, the man some have called "the Indiana Jones of watches," who says watch collecting is not rational: "It's a love affair, and you cannot put limits on love."

Cars & Watches: Time On The Tour d' Elegance

This video highlights a very fun drive at this year’s Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week: the Tour d’Elegance. Each year, more than a hundred of the world’s most beautiful cars take to the roads of Newport for the drive, from pre-war legends to modern masterpieces.
This year’s Tour d’Elegance begins at Second Beach in Newport, winds along Ocean Drive, and then returns to a grand finish on Bellevue Avenue — where the public can then chat with the drivers and owners.
Hodinkee Editor TanTan Wang is our designated navigator along with A. Lange & Söhne’s CEO Wilhelm Schmid on the drive. So bright and early Saturday morning, they drove off in a gorgeous Champagne Yellow 1963 Porsche 356B Cabriolet, and had a lighthearted chat about Lange, cars, and more over the cool fall breeze of the coast. As part of an automotive-themed two-day series on Hodinkee, we’re thrilled to share some of the highlights of the 3-hour drive with Wilhelm Schmid and TanTan.

Desk jockeys and their concealed carry.

It's a bit off-topic...but I wound up with a sidearm of a desk-jockey ossifer. From the Third Reich.

My father was part of the final push into Berlin...by then, the Kr@uts were pulling back faster than the Allied forces were moving forward. They left a lot behind, including a lot of dead. Some of the dead, probably experienced payback from unhappy subordinates.

Somehow, my old man wound up with a war souvenir...a spotless Mauser Hsc. Never been fired. Still had factory grease on it. Had a leather holster...NOT embosed; that suggests that the holster, at least, was made late in the Thousand-Year Reich's existence.

But my understanding was, my father liberated it, along with an Olivetti typewriter set up for German use, including the "ß" they so love...from an office decorated with its deceased occupant. He wasn't going to be typing any more or learning how to shoot his Mauser.

I'd still have it, but it wasn't much use. Damn thing would jam - that's characteristic of the design. It was unused, though, until I had it disassembled, inspected, and then fired it on the range.

It really wasn't a memento.

It was, basically, lost in his life-changes.

It takes some explaining: He got back from the war, relatively young (mid-twenties) after getting used like a Kleenex by the Army. They kept him two years after disarmament, because he spoke and read perfect German.

He got back to the States, slim, trim, and eager for a middle-class life. He'd never had it before - he was a dual-national, born in Ohio, grew up in Germany to age 12. Then, with his father's disappearance, he and my grandmother had to sneak out.

To living in the Division Avenue projects in Cleveland.

The war represented a chance for college; some money saved and the GI Bill of Rights. He interviewed with several good schools, including the Colorado School of Mines.

Later he tried sailing; carpentry; suburban living. He was bored with all of it, although he kept living in the suburbs.

When I was ten, he got it in his mind he was gonna teach me to shoot. He had about five long guns - and the Mauser, although I didn't know. He sent me to Hunter Safety Class. I shot his Savage .22/shotgun combo...once. He made a big deal about cleaning - made it into a two hour job; so much so that later, cleaning my own was intimidating, until I learned how to do it quickly and properly.

And then the guns went away. The outdoor stuff went away. He retreated to his easy chair, to read and listen to classical music.

And then went the way of all flesh. My mother had become a flaming liberal, and got rid of his guns. Without asking any of us kids. Probably she had them destroyed.

But she missed the Mauser, and I found it under other papers in his safe, after her death.

Not the way you'd want to be remembered...parents who think firearms are somehow dirty and shameful. How it got to that, by the WWII generation...I guess, it was my father's fatigue with life and my mother's boob-toob addiction.

Remember, everyone: It's not just what you leave for your kids, but how you do it. As something to treasure, or something secret and embarrassing...

:iagree:

Mate, still a very cool story

I understand a bit of what ur experience was like. My Dad was was born 1943 in Occupied Netherlands. Buy the end of the war he'd seen his brother shot ( in the shoulder & he recovered ), stealing food was just the usual. Then trading with the Americans to scrape by.

So he was a tough/hard young man by the time him & family arrived in AUS. Worked as a slaughter man in a abattoir. Aussies taught hard drinking, smoking & fighting ( never anything to us though ) Saw him punch a cop thru his side window. Only reason he stayed out of jail was the local small town Cop was so drunk at the time that the city cops that turn up buried the whole thing.

So I got along with him as such. But not a close relationship, because he was very hardened to life. Luckily my Mum was sensitive & very caring/protective, so growing up middle class in a small rural town in AUS was good.

Life experience for all is such a variety. That's why we are all different

Remember, everyone: It's not just what you leave for your kids, but how you do it.
VERY fine words 😁

Francis Ford Coppola luxury watch sells for mega price

(NewsNation) — Revered film director Francis Ford Coppola, whose fortunes suffered last year when his self-financed feature “Megalopolis” bombed at the box office, has bought a little more time to stay afloat.

A one-of-a-kind watch owned by the 86-year-old Oscar winner swiftly sold for $10.8 million over the weekend to an anonymous bidder, according to auction house Phillips.

It’s not just any watch: The platinum F.P. Journe timepiece features a sculpted, articulated hand that transforms hourly, with the director’s name engraved on the back.

The nearly $11 million winning bid for Coppola’s prototype is considered the highest bid for a timepiece in the U.S. since Phillips sold a Rolex owned by late actor Paul Newman for $17.8 million in 2017.

I Purchased My First Longines: A Watch So Classy It Makes Most Pateks, APs, & Rolex Look Tacky!

Dec 11, 2025 #wristwatchcheck #watches #watchcollector
During the summer I had the honor of co-hosting the inaugural event at the new flagship Longines store in NYC, and reviewing the Longines Legend Diver. As you know, I love history, artistry, and horological innovation; and in discovering firsthand many of the brand's massively historical pieces that were brought to the event from their museum...inevitably, I caught the Longines bug. And so, after a few months of watch hunting, I finally came across a piece that encapsulates everything that makes this Swiss watchmaker so revered, worthy of respect, timelessly elegant, and amazing value for money—especially when compared to timepieces from other brands like Patek Philippe, Rolex, Richard Mille, and Audemars Piguet. Join me for an exciting Longines watch unboxing of an overlooked and hidden capolavoro I recently purchased, and the very first Longines in my watch collection. We'll take a close look at its features, and how it wears out on the streets of New York City, with some art deco architectural masterpieces as the perfect setting for such a classy brand. What do you think about this 1950s 23Z manual wind caliber based watch? Which Longines speaks to you the most? And what have you added to your collection this year? Please share in the comments, and here's to another year...onwards and upwards!
