That pile looks like about 40 coins. I could buy those today for under $900 each, say $35K give or take? If that was serious true wealth back then, they yes we are wealthy today. Even at the historic high gold price. That would have beena hoard back in the day. We are wealthy.
.I was buying them @ $325. I remember them being advertised for sale in the Sunday newpaper for $89.

Thinking of middle ages and even two hundred years ago. We travel around the world, have indoor plumbing heat and light. Work only eight hours a day five days per week and retire with money coming in. Great food and lots of variety.
Remember when salt and spices cost a lot?
My generation hasn’t been called to war in any draft and there are no bars on my windows and no barbed wire/glass encrusted concrete around my single family home. Health care is easy and fast—no one is gonna die of a heart attack at 55 unless they want to. Want health care in a different country? That is easy too.
House full of all the amenities and hobbies i want. We are wealthy in human’s history. Our metal is just to protect against the crash and preserve some spending.
I could be out the door and on the other side of the world in twenty hours for a half oz of gold.
Are people under the poverty level really poor? Other countries are a different story
.
BOOM,.... Nicely put,....... We have one heck of a lot to be thankful for
