How Trump is turning NATO into a cash machine

President Donald Trump has recast a generations-old transatlantic alliance built on shared democratic values into a framework he’s more comfortable dealing with — a business.

He’s persuaded NATO members to turbocharge their own defense spending and to invest heavily in American arms for Ukraine. This week, at the annual meeting of alliance leaders, the U.S. president will again turn the focus into how much Europeans can spend on American military equipment.

NATO unveils billions in arms deals to prove its firepower to Trump

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — NATO on Tuesday showcased a series of military projects worth billions of dollars in an attempt to convince President Donald Trump that U.S. allies are converting fresh defense spending into real firepower.

“It’s money well spent,” an energized NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte told government ministers and defense industry officials on the sidelines of a summit in Turkey. He was speaking at a defense industry forum billed as NATO’s “big reveal,” to the thrum of techno music and a slick video display.

Trump, who is slated to arrive in Ankara later Tuesday, has branded NATO a “paper tiger” that would cease to function without American arms and leadership.

Turkey is part of NATO

Flashback: The fearless Greek MEP Afroditi Latinopoulou, founder and leader of Greece’s Voice of Reason party, sparked massive Muslim outrage by telling the raw truth in the European Parliament.

President Trump needs to hear every word.

Turkey is an Islamic state with a criminal record, led by a half-crazy Islamist dictator who threatens Greece, Cyprus, and Israel on a daily basis.

Erdogan’s regime floods Europe with jihadist migrants, shelters terrorists, and rejects Greece’s sovereign waters, all while acting as an enemy of the West.

Pretending Turkey is still a reliable ally is not a strategy. It is dangerous self-delusion.

The Trump administration must stop coddling this hostile Islamist power. Strength is the only language it understands, and weakness only invites more aggression.

We need far more leaders willing to say what she just said.

here is her speech translated by google

Turkey, a state with a crazy dictator at its helm who refuses to digest that Greece's territorial waters in the Aegean are 12 nautical miles. What is Turkey? A country with a heavy criminal record.

A country that we mistreat as democratic. It is the pimp of the Mediterranean since it constantly threatens us, Greece, Cyprus and Israel.

While at the same time it is the biggest wound of the European Union in terms of illegal immigration. Turkey opens the spigot of illegal immigration to blackmail us on a permanent basis. It illegally occupies half of Cyprus and instead of us taking tough measures against it, you continue to do business with it. Now they even arrest journalists from the BBC if they do not consider their reports to be flattering enough for Master Erdogan. Of course, it is no coincidence that it is in the last places for freedom of the press. We are talking about such a democracy.

As for the persecution of Christians, what can we say first. The numbers speak for themselves. In 1914, the Christian communities in Turkey numbered around 4.5 million and 15 to 20% of the population. In 1980, they numbered 1% of the population and today they are only 0.2% of the population. There, the persecution of the few Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians who are left was exterminated and continues in every way. And we as Europe are indifferent and do all the favors to Turkey in a pimp state with a crazy dictator at its helm who refuses to digest that Greece's territorial waters in the Aegean are 12 nautical miles. Tragic. Ah.

  • NATO chief Mark Rutte lavished praise on U.S. President Donald Trump during a fractious summit in Turkey this week.
  • Trump, in turn, described the former Dutch prime minister as a “great leader” and the alliance’s “biggest asset.”
  • Rutte’s approach to managing Trump prompted some to question whether his flattery delivered any tangible benefits for the military alliance.

Report to Congress on Issues for NATO at the Ankara Summit

The following is the July 2, 2026, Congressional Research Service report, NATO: Issues for the July 2026 Ankara Summit.

From the Report

Heads of state and government from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO’s) 32 members are scheduled to meet for a summit in Ankara, Turkey, on July 7-8, 2026. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has outlined three core priorities for the summit: continuing to increase allied defense investment, bolstering transatlantic defense industrial production, and supporting Ukraine. In Ankara, allied leaders also are expected to address President Donald J. Trump’s criticisms of NATO and concerns from some NATO members about the impact on NATO political cohesion and alliance credibility. A top Trump Administration priority for NATO has been to urge European allies and Canada to increase defense spending and assume greater responsibility for conventional defense in Europe.
