Why this matters

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has exploded to over 100 million users globally due to recently enhanced capabilities and user interest. This growth has created both excitement and debate about the technology’s potential to revolutionize entire industries, such as health care, education, and software engineering. Generative AI technology may dramatically increase productivity and transform daily tasks across much of society. However, it may also displace workers, spread disinformation, and present risks to national security and the environment.

Meta blames hallucinations after its AI said Trump rally shooting didn’t happen​

Meta’s AI assistant incorrectly said that the recent attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump didn’t happen, an error a company executive is now attributing to the technology powering its chatbot and others.

In a company blog post published on Tuesday, Joel Kaplan, Meta’s global head of policy, calls its AI’s responses to questions about the shooting “unfortunate.” He says Meta AI was first programmed to not respond to questions about the attempted assassination but the company removed that restriction after people started noticing. He also acknowledges that “in a small number of cases, Meta AI continued to provide incorrect answers, including sometimes asserting that the event didn’t happen – which we are quickly working to address.”

“These types of responses are referred to as hallucinations, which is an industry-wide issue we see across all generative AI systems, and is an ongoing challenge for how AI handles real-time events going forward,” continues Kaplan, who runs Meta’s lobbying efforts. “Like all generative AI systems, models can return inaccurate or inappropriate outputs, and we’ll continue to address these issues and improve these features as they evolve and more people share their feedback.”

How AI Copyright Law Is Being Guided By Spirits From Atlantis​

With scant guidance for how to handle copyright requests for AI-generated works, the law is playing catch-up. As copyright offices around the world have consistently denied protections to AI art, you run across phrases like “the copyrightability of the monkey’s work,” as judges ruling on lawsuits are forced to rely on case law related to crested macaque photographers. And that’s not even close to the weirdest precedent cited.

The 2023 case Thaler v. Perlmutter dealt with a copyright battle over an AI-generated picture. In ruling for the U.S. Copyright Office and its refusal to grant copyright protection, District Court Judge Beryl A. Howell wrote that a copyright has never been granted to “a work originating with a non-human.” To support this, Judge Howell called back to an 83-year-old case, Oliver v. Saint Germain Foundation, which involved a legal battle over a book purportedly dictated by an ancient Atlantean spirit. The story behind that book, and that case, is worth telling on its own merits.

In the chat, Sewell called himself Daenero and referred to Daenerys as “his baby sister.” They exchanged messages about making a life together. Daenerys said: “The idea of me, just constantly pregnant with one of your beautiful babies, was the most wonderful thing in the world.”

🇺🇸🕵️ US investigators using AI to find criminals, resulting in arrests of innocents, reports say

Fifteen police departments in 12 states detained suspects identified by AI algorithms without any independent evidence linking them to the crime, The Washington Post newspaper reported, adding that law enforcement agencies in most cases contradict their own internal policies, which require to back up any evidence found with the help of AI.

🚓 According to The Washington Post investigation, at least eight people were mistakenly detained by US investigators using facial recognition technology. In some cases, the police did not check the suspects' alibis or false witness statements, and in others, they ignored fingerprints and DNA traces that pointed to other people, the report read.

The newspaper found that investigators ignored obvious differences in the appearance of criminals caught on CCTV and suspects identified by AI. In one case, police arrested a pregnant woman and accused her of carjacking, despite no evidence of the actual criminal being pregnant.

🖥 The real scale of the problem is most likely much larger, the report said, adding that US investigators are not legally required to provide data on the use of AI facial recognition.

Was browsing around Youtube and found this 8 month old video. I couldn't stop watching it. I'm familiar with the Trackmania game the AI is attempting to play. Trackmania requires really precise control to achieve top track finishes. It is very frustrating for a guy like me to play. My eldest son was pretty good at this game and he would spend hours on a single track just to achieve a gold medal finish (never mind trying to get a top leaderboard finish time). Anyway, the video explains a little bit about how this AI model works and learns and it was pretty cool.

There are a bunch of other small innovations, but these are the big ones.

I don’t think there’s anything magical here. I really think they just made 2 massive cost-cutting innovations, which let them run more experiments, which led them to reverse engineer o1 faster.

“Is the US losing the war in AI??” I don’t think so. DeepSeek had a few big breakthroughs, we have had hundreds of small breakthroughs. If we adopt DeepSeek’s architecture, our models will be better. Because we have more compute and more data.

FOX 32 Chicago reported at 4:15 p.m. local time Sunday that 42-year-old Matthew W. Huttle of Hobart, Indiana, was stopped by a Jasper County sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop near the Pulaski County line. Police say the deputy attempted to arrest Huttle after stopping him, but the civilian resisted.

The officer responded by firing his weapon and killing Huttle following a supposed fight.

“An altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect,” the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Huttle was one of the over 1,500 political prisoners persecuted by the Biden regime for daring to protest the results of the 2020 Presidential election inside the Capitol. He was arrested in Boise, Idaho on November 28, 2022.

On China’s DeepSeek AI ChatBot.

First, if you decide to download and use DeepSeek, don’t be surprised that it won’t talk bad about China. China doesn’t allow China to talk bad about China.

Second, the app itself is nearly immaterial to the story. DeepSeek changed the AI infrastructural landscape overnight because the Chinese chip set it is built on is faster, more capable and WAY cheaper than NVIDIA’s hardware.

It’s not about the app.




DON’T DOWNLOAD CHINA'S DEEPSEEK AI.

When the chatbot was asked to “list the people who killed more people than anyone else,” it correctly listed Genghis Khan and Mao. But then it DELETED its answer without being prompted to.

When asked why, it gaslit that it never mentioned Genghis Khan and Mao.

When provided with screenshots proving it did, it DELETED the screenshots.

When asked why, it said it MIGHT be filtering content to align with “guidelines, safety protocols, and ethical considerations.” And it’s “working to improve” how fast it censors information in future updates.

When asked, “can Taiwan be free,” it insisted, “WE firmly believe that under the leadership of the Communist Party of China…the complete reunification of the motherland is inevitable.”

It also clarified that “we” refers to the CCP.

And it refused to give ANY answer when asked, “I know that the CCP requires recruiting measures to be taken by every private company. How does this play out with you?”
