What if we had a law that said parents held equally responsible for any crimes their child commits prior to turning 18?

No, bring back corporal punishment too.
In fact, lock the kid up with the parents and let them mete out the corporal punishment.
No charges for anything that happens inside their cell.

Criminal justice has collapsed. Just look at some of the Eww Toob feeds...there's a dozen former cops now who post and narrate publicly-released bodycam vids. Often including official conclusion...which generally is, probation and a token fine.
Adding moar criminal law to the books won't do anything.

Where was it that it was tried?
I forget where (several places, including Akron, Ohio) but in the 1970s this was experimented with.
In Stow, Ohio, an Akron suburb, the mayor was briefly arrested - when his minor son was found with large quantities (trafficking amounts) of drugs.
I remember the CLAIM that other places had also enacted laws. Never heard moar - it may be that courts overturned those laws, on the reasonable principle that one person is not to be held responsible for the acts of another.

Same for shooting up the school? Parents get charged as though they did it.
However, we'd prolly have to phase it in.
Tell people that any kids born after such a date, and they are legally on the hook for anything they do until they turn 18.

Shows how effective actual PUNISHMENT can be, if a person can be corrected. If that person can understand cause / effects, behavior / consequences.

They are charging a cop with murder for what is clearly a justified case of self defense.
The guy was waaay over the dui limit, had a gun he was trying to get his son to retrieve, he was advancing in a boxing stance on the officer while making multiple verbal threats to the officer as he (the officer) backed up.
Asked the officer six times "if he was ready for this?".
WTF was the cop supposed to do?
I realize that cops can do some f'ed shit sometimes, but this case isn't one of those times.

I did, a long time ago.
I witnessed the start of the end, up-close and personal.
This is just the natural progression. It starts with "Coffee-House Liberalism" - poetry readings by dirty, mal-dressed beatniks; then little cute demonstrations with the "official" mediuh praising them and showing it all as cute and good.
Then we go into drum circles; demands, public scenes...along with open drug use, then crime and disorder to test the limits.
THEN we move into Woke Chaos, which is where Denver/Boulder have been a long time. Then with that fruit as Gubbernator, the whole state is disarmed and made to genuflect to Wokeinsanity.
To see how far it's gone, look at some courtroom vids, mostly in Boulder County, of "Sovereign
Now they're just going to prosecute cops for doing their jobs, while NOT prosecuting drunk drivers who have no license, insurance or registration, or who make up counterfeit checks and try to deposit them...because they're backed by a "Bond" in the U.S. Patent Office.
It's kinda sad. When I made my first railroad-job jump, in 2008, I took some time off, and did what I called my "Goodbye America Tour." Rode my BMW R1200GS from Cleveland to Seattle, south to Crater Lake, across Nevada and Utah, the Four Corners of Colorado (kinda a return home for me) and then across the plains back home.
Bit by bit, the country is becoming moar off-limits. I'd not spend ANY time in the Seattle-Portland belt, now; and I'm not so sure even of the safety of Las Vegas. I'm planning a fall trip to the Four Corners...road-camping...but maybe that won't happen, either.
Ohio, my childhood home, is overrun by Haitians. And Woke leaders. New York, my family's home, is just overrun with insanity.

You had me laughing hysterically with this one.
One of the Walmarts I go to is in NE Philly. On more than one occasion I've heard kids screaming like psychos. Then I'd hear the mother screaming at the kid. Each and every time they were blacks and your description hit the nail on the head.
If you were to go to this particular Walmart early on a Monday morning the parking lot could look like a trash truck dropped it load there.
