What shortwave listening is like INSIDE China | DXing on Qodosen DX-286 in Guangzhou 🐉

Jul 24, 2025 #alaska #Guangzhou #Shortwave
What does shortwave listening inside China actually sound like? DXers around the world hear signals form China often, including the many jamming signals. But what does the jamming sound like inside China? Does it work? Can DXers inside China hear anything else?
In this video, I show my shortwave DXing inside a hotel room in Guangzhou using the Qodosen DX-286 — and share what it's like to hear both the censored and uncensored side of the airwaves from within China’s borders. I used the whip antenna on the Qodosen DX-286 and it once again showed what an exceptional little radio it is. Many signals were remarkably clear, almost FM quality.
China is home to many powerful shortwave stations like CNR1 and CRI, often heard around the world. But very few videos show what it's like to be an SWL inside the country — especially in a heavily jammed environment. This could be one of the first such recordings on YouTube.

Russia's doomsday radio sparks mystery before summit

Russia’s ‘Doomsday Radio’, a lonely rusted radio station in a forest north of Moscow, has woken up.

UVB-76 – also known as ‘The Buzz’er – was used during the height of the Cold War by the KGB, has for decades been sputtering bizarre beeps and cryptic gobbledygook.

The short-wave station broadcast the words, ‘schesolub’, ‘druzhnost’, ‘kener”, ‘ryushny’, ‘dzhinochili’ and ‘lyukospas’ yesterday.

During just one hour of afternoon DXing at Kurth Kiln Regional Park, I managed to hear many stations! I used the SDRPlay RSPduo with SDRconnect software, connected to a Wolf River coil and an extra-long whip antenna. We also explored the area, and some feathered friends stopped by to check out the music. It was a splendid way to spend a lazy afternoon.

Listening to Radio New Zealand in an old French shortwave radio receiver

Aug 21, 2025
Radio New Zealand, coming in right now quite acceptably on 9700 kHz from its Rangitaiki transmitter. Interestingly, what they do on this frequency at this time of day is relay the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) programming for the whole Pacific. Radio Australia stopped transmitting from its own facilities quite a few years ago, and Radio New Zealand has remained as the leading broadcaster in the Pacific region. The receiver is a venerable AME 7G from the 1950s.

The Mysterious Shortwave Radio Station Stoking US-Russia Nuclear Fears

Shortly after US president Donald Trump hung up a call with Russia’s Vladimir Putin this spring, an obscure shortwave radio channel, broadcasting from a military base somewhere in Russia, sprang to life.

Through a fog of static, at 4625 kHz on the shortwave dial, a man’s voice spoke in monotone: “Nikolai, Zhenya, Tatiana, Ivan.” He repeats the message—spelled out in the Russian phonetic alphabet—followed by a series of numbers and letters. The whole message reads: “NZhTI 01263 BOLTANKA 4430 9529.” What it means is anyone’s guess, but lots of people were guessing.

This radio station, dubbed UVB-76, has spent much of 2025 broadcasting cryptic messages, strange music, and pirate interruptions. The channel has elicited fascination for decades. This time, however, something is different. Now, Moscow’s network of propagandists and warmongers are suddenly fascinated by this obscure channel.

I'm collecting BBC Radio 4 198 kHz Shipping Forecast recordings on all my radios: JRC NRD525

Aug 27, 2025
Hi there, here's another recording of the Shipping Forecast, this time with the legendary NRD525. Great audio actually on the AUX bandwidth setting (widest). As I have said previously, this signal will disappear at some point, so enjoy it while you can.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 10/07/24 at 00:48 hrs UTC, using a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna (outdoors) via a Bonito NTi AntennaJet RF splitter and GI1000 galvanic isolator.
Thanks for watching and 73.
