Xi Welcomes Stream of Leaders Shaken by Tariff’s New World Order: President Xi Jinping is welcoming a procession of leaders looking to mend fences with China. The visits come after Donald Trump sealed a tariff truce with China, and leaders are eager to engage with Xi so they aren’t sidelined by US-China maneuvering. Foreign leaders are also visiting Beijing to discuss trade and secure access to critical minerals, such as rare earths, with China being the dominant global supplier. So much stupid… (Bloomberg free)

Europe weighs using trade ‘bazooka’ against the U.S. as Greenland crisis deepens

  • European countries are reportedly considering retaliatory tariffs and wider economic counter-measures against the U.S.
  • This comes after President Donald Trump threatened regional economies with fresh export levies if they didn’t let him “buy” Greenland.
  • Trump said eight European allies would face increasing tariffs, starting at 10% on Feb. 1 and rising to 25% on June 1, if a deal is not reached allowing the U.S, to buy the Arctic island.
European states are reportedly considering retaliatory tariffs and broader punitive economic counter-measures against the U.S. after President Donald Trump threatened fresh export levies, deepening a rift over Greenland.

Trump announced Saturday that eight European countries would face increasing tariffs, starting at 10% on Feb. 1 and rising to 25% on June 1, if a deal is not reached allowing Washington to acquire Greenland, the mineral-rich island which is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark.

EU response to Trump's tariffs will be 'unflinching', says Ursula von der Leyen

The European Union's response to Trump's tariffs over Greenland would be "unflinching", Ursula von der Leyen said as the American president doubled down on his desire to acquire the sprawling island from Denmark.

If Donald Trump goes ahead with the 10% tariffs against eight European countries to force a sale of Greenland, the European Union will hit back with an "unflinching, united and proportional" response, Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday morning as she extended her hand to the American president to deepen cooperation in the Arctic region.

Trump threatens 200% tariffs on French wine if Paris does not join Gaza 'Board of Peace'

The "Board of Peace" was an idea initially proposed by Trump last September as part of his plan to end the war in Gaza, although the initiative now seems to be aimed at mediating global conflicts more broadly.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne after an aide for French President Emmanuel Macron said France "does not intend" to accept an invitation to join the "Board of Peace" for Gaza.

You are ignoring the fact that for decades, the US has been subject to other nations tariffs while all we were being told was that our tariffs we're bad, and they had to be gotten rid of.

Why are tariffs ok on our products, but bad if applied to their products?

Your idiot Sachs totally ignores that part of it.

Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

DONALD J. TRUMP
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

TACO Don quits again....
It sounds like he is getting what he wanted.

So why shouldn't he cancel the tariff plan?

It was only being touted as a negotiating tool in order to achieve a desired outcome.

To still impose it would be just plain mean.

Denmark dumped 100 million in bonds, I don't think he liked that at all. If enough ants rebel, the grasshoppers die.

Denmark dumped 100 million in bonds, I don't think he liked that at all.
That implies someone bought them. Does this affect anything much? Maybe the buyer won't spend that $100M on new bonds?
Wouldn't $100M almost cover the cost of the cruise missiles wasted on an abandoned Syrian air field?
Or about 1/400 of the cash that Bill Clinton found under his couch to send to Mexico?

I'm still buying maple syrup from them, TACO Donnie is a putz.

Will 100% tariffs on Canada affect gold and silver? If enacted, will anyone want to buy Maples? Will dealers buy them with huge premiums to spot?

Carney says Canada not pursuing free trade deal with China as Trump threatens 100% tariffs

  • Carney’s remarks come after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to slap a 100% tariff on Canadian exports if Ottawa “makes a deal” with China.
  • On Jan. 16, China and Canada came to an agreement that saw both sides lower tariffs on some exports.
Canada has “no intention” of pursuing a free trade deal with China, Prime Minister Mark Carney said, after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to slap punitive tariffs on Ottawa.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Carney said that the country respects its obligations under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement, known as CUSMA in Canada and the USMCA in the U.S., and will not pursue a free trade agreement without notifying the other two parties.

Trump threat on South Korea jolts trade partners who thought they had deals

SEOUL—President Trump sowed fresh doubts this week about the staying power of his trade deals with a vow to resurrect tariffs on South Korea despite an accord reached last fall.

Trump said Monday that South Korea’s reciprocal tariff rate, as well as levies on autos and other key sectors, would rise back to 25% from their current 15%. He cited delays in South Korea’s legislature approving a pact struck in late October with the country’s president, Lee Jae Myung. Trump didn’t say when the tariff increases would occur.

All eyes are on Trump’s reaction to the ‘mother of all deals’ between India and the EU

  • India and the EU have praised the “landmark” free trade agreement, calling it the “mother of all deals.”
  • The trade deal is being widely seen as a strategic hedge against volatile U.S. trade policies.
  • Attention has turned to how U.S. President Donald Trump could react to the deal.
The ink is barely dry on the European Union and India’s historic trade deal but all eyes are now on how President Donald Trump will react to the free trade agreement that’s widely seen as a strategic hedge against the U.S.′ volatile trade policies and tariff threats.

The deal, which was confirmed earlier Tuesday, has taken almost two decades to agree and will see the trading behemoths gradually cut tariffs to zero on the majority of each other’s imports, except on some key products and sectors.

Trump is yet to react publicly to the EU-India deal, which was announced in the early hours of Tuesday morning European time, but he and the White House are unlikely to be happy with the deal. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has already criticized the EU for forging ahead with a trade agreement with India.
