Why have Trump’s bond documents been rejected – and what does this mean for his legal troubles?​

Documents for Donald Trump’s $175m bond in his New York civil fraud case have been rejected and “returned for correction” to the former president due to missing financial information.

A docket appeared on the New York County Supreme Court website on Wednesday, detailing that a “Bond/Undertaking” had been “returned for correction”.

The court said that the reason for the rejection was that some of the documentation filed on behalf of the Republican presidential candidate failed to include a current financial statement, power of attorney or list an attorney-in-fact.

The blunder was first spotted by New York attorney Jeffrey K Levine, who posted a screenshot of the court’s explanation for the rejection, which read: “The court has returned the documents listed below for the following reasons: Please include a current financial statement and Power of Attorney.

IF he is 'convicted' it will be overturned in appeals.

These prosecutors are violating the intent of the law and making shit up. Same with the J6 convictions. All made up BS.

Jack Smith's response is hysterical (and not in a funny way in a desperate way) bc he knows he has little control over her decision related to final jury instructions.

And he is arguing the basis for Trump's "unauthorized possession" of national defense material rests on Obama exec order not the Presidential Records Act.

So everyone who cried for months that "DRUMPF BROKE THE PRA!" can sit down. Jack Smith says PRA now has nothing to do with the case.

Also reminder of the bait and switch here. NARA sought files based on the claims Trump was violating the PRA. He produced 15 boxes of papers. NARA then claimed they found records with "classified markings" and sent a criminal referral (1st time ever) to FBI.

FBI promptly opened investigation. FBI sent a subpoena to Trump in May 2022 seeking more records with "classified markings." They turned over 38 more files.

Then in August, FBI sought search warrant seeking "national defense information." Reminder too we have not seen full unredacted application for search warrant.

Did DOJ seek warrant under the PRA or the Espionage Act or Obama's Exec Order or....what?

Eight days and counting until Trump's hush money criminal trial begins. Wonder what we'll see this week? What will he do to try to stop it? Going to be an interesting week - for sure.
 

Trump says going to jail for gag order violation would be a ‘great honor,’ compares himself to Mandela​

Donald Trump on Saturday said he welcomed the prospect of going to jail for violating a gag order in his upcoming New York hush money trial.

“I will gladly become a Modern Day Nelson Mandela — It will be my GREAT HONOR,” the former president wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post attacking New York State Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over Trump’s case.

It was not the first time Trump has likened himself to a martyr as he faces a flurry of criminal charges.

In an October rant against his various lawsuits, the presumptive Republican nominee also compared himself to Mandela, the former president of South Africa who spent 27 years in prison for his anti-apartheid activism.

And last week, Trump took to Truth Social to share a message that likened his legal troubles to the persecution of Jesus Christ.

Saturday’s tirade occurred just over a week before the trial is scheduled to begin on April 15.

NEW YORK — Prospective jurors for former President Donald Trump’s upcoming criminal trial in Manhattan won’t be asked if they are a Republican or a Democrat, but they will be questioned about whether they are a member of the Proud Boys or the QAnon movement.

The judge overseeing Trump’s trial, set to begin April 15, on Monday unveiled the list of 42 questions he will use to select 12 jurors to decide the former president’s fate on charges that he falsified business records in order to conceal the nature of a hush money payment to a porn star on the eve of the 2016 election.

In a seven-page order, New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan said he would ask the questions only of jurors who haven’t initially self-identified as unable to be fair and impartial and who don’t have another reason to believe they can’t serve on the jury.

Trump's first criminal trial is set to start Monday in New York City. If you struggle to keep track of the man’s multitudinous indictments, this is the one involving Stormy Daniels, the adult-film star he’s accused of paying off in advance of the 2016 presidential election to keep quiet about their alleged affair.

He has referred to Daniels as “Horseface” and written on social media, “She knows nothing about me, a total con!” Last year, he referred to the case as “the Stormy ‘horseface’ Daniels extortion plot.”

Trump has claimed – over and over and over again – that the case is part of a vast left-wing conspiracy against him, a “Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement” and “Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history.”

In a statement in March 2023, Trump name-checked Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and boasted: “So our Movement, and our Party – united and strong – will first defeat Alvin Bragg, and then we will defeat Joe Biden.”

You’d think an abundantly confident macho man like Trump would be chomping at the bit to get into a courtroom with his lawyers and prove the “Thugs and Radical Left Monsters” wrong, to pull back the curtain on this unjust persecution/prosecution, to shove the evidence of his angelic innocence right in their smug faces.

Trump spent the day listening to strangers insult him. And he couldn’t say a single thing back.​

NEW YORK — In its first week, Donald Trump’s criminal trial is forcing the former president, a man who famously surrounds himself with sycophants, to sit quietly and listen to the unfiltered opinions of those typically kept at arm’s-length: People he might call his “haters.”

During jury selection, Trump has heard himself described by those under consideration as racist and sexist and a narcissist. He’s been presented with social media posts calling for officials to “lock him up.” He’s been told, to his face, that he’s “very selfish and self-serving.”

And through it all, Trump has been required to remain seated, not gesturing, not talking and not using his phone. He has not even been allowed to adjust the temperature a few degrees in a courtroom he described as “freezing.”

To top it off, some of those people — including the one who called him selfish and said she outright dislikes him — are now members of the jury of 12 Manhattanites who will decide whether to convict him of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal a sex scandal.

"The alternate reality Trump lives in is crumbling" with first criminal trial: ex federal prosecutor​

With a jury now impaneled, Donald Trump’s hush-money trial can finally begin in earnest. The outcome of the trial will impact not just Trump’s freedom but the outcome of the 2024 election and the future of the country’s democracy.

Per New York state law, no cameras are allowed inside the courtroom. The courtroom sketch artists have depicted defendant Trump as bored, sullen, hostile, occasionally happy, and with a look of contempt and disgust on his face. When sleeping in court, Trump looks very tired and drained of energy, his mouth open and his head fighting against gravity. Trump is reportedly quite upset at how he is being drawn, Rolling Stone reports. “Trump has also privately asked people close to him if they agree that the courtroom sketch-artist must be out to get him," sources told the outlet.

Trump’s attorneys, meanwhile, are still trying to stop their client’s first criminal trial by filing appeals for a change of venue because of supposed “bias” against their client, a claim the court has rejected.

Trump, for his part, has repeatedly violated his gag orders by threatening the judges, prosecutors, district attorneys, witnesses, jury members, and other people who are trying to enforce the rule of law. Judge Juan Merchan has mostly been successful in trying to discipline the impudent former president, at one point commanding him to sit down in court like he was a disobedient dog.

In an attempt to better understand what is likely to happen next in Trump’s first criminal trial such as how the prosecution and defense are going to proceed and what the larger strategy may be behind Trump’s acting out in court (Trump is likely attempting to get thrown in prison as a way of rallying his followers as a fake martyr), I recently spoke with Kenneth McCallion. He is a former Justice Department prosecutor who also worked for the New York attorney general's office as a prosecutor on Trump-related racketeering cases.
