Britain, US Blame Iran for Enabling Red Sea Shipping Attacks​

Britain has condemned the recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and has placed the blame on Iran for supporting the Houthi militants responsible for the incidents. The United States also is holding Iran accountable for enabling these attacks.

The latest attacks, which occurred on Sunday in international waters in the southern Red Sea, targeted three commercial vessels. Yemen’s Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating that they had launched drone and missile attacks against two Israeli ships. These incidents add to a growing list of similar attacks on Israeli-linked commercial ships in the area in response to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

Why does France's interception of Houthi drones in Red Sea matter?​

The French navy’s multi-mission frigate, Languedoc, downed two Houthi drones off the coast of Yemen, according to a statement from the French military. The interception took place on December 9 at night in the Red Sea. The drones were launched by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

US Central Command highlighted the role of the French frigate. “The French Navy have announced that the Languedoc (D653), a FREMM Multi-Mission Frigate, shot down two Houthi drones in the Red Sea off the Coast of Yemen that were launched from Yemen,” US Central Command said.

This is important. The Languedoc is a new advanced multi-purpose frigate that specializes in anti-submarine warfare. It also carries air defenses. It is part of a relatively new program of frigate building that has seen eight similar frigates in the French navy put to sea as part of the same class. The Languedoc was launched in 2014 and commissioned in 2016 in the naval base of Toulon. It is 142 meters long and has a crew of around 120.

GAZA/CAIRO, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Hamas said it was striking back against Israeli forces across Gaza on Monday and Palestinians and international relief agencies said public order was disintegrating as hunger spread, fuelling fears of a mass exodus to Egypt.

The narrow coastal strip has been under a full Israeli blockade since the start of the conflict more than two months ago and the border with Egypt is the only other way out.

Most of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been driven from their homes and residents say it is impossible to find refuge, or increasingly food, in the densely populated enclave, with around 18,000 people already killed and conflict intensifying.

Norwegian-Flagged Tanker Hit By Missile Fired from Yemen​

A Norwegian-flagged chemical tanker has been hit by an anti-ship missile in international waters in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait off the coast of Yemen, the U.S. has confirmed.

The U.S. Central Command reported the attack on the MT Strinda at around 4 p.m. EST on December 11. Officials have determined that the ship was struck by Anti-Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM) launched from a Houthi controlled area of Yemen while passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb.

The Strinda reported damage and a fire on-board, but so far no casualties have been reported. The report said there were no US ships in the area at the time of the attack, but the USS Mason responded to the Strinda’s mayday call and is rendering assistance. The severity of the fire is unknown.

‘Buying quiet’: Inside the Israeli plan that propped up Hamas​

TEL AVIV, Israel — Just weeks before Hamas launched the deadly Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, the head of Mossad arrived in Doha, Qatar, for a meeting with Qatari officials.

For years, the Qatari government had been sending millions of dollars a month into the Gaza Strip — money that helped prop up the Hamas government there. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel not only tolerated those payments, he had encouraged them.

During his meetings in September with Qatari officials, according to several people familiar with the secret discussions, the Mossad chief, David Barnea, was asked a question that had not been on the agenda: Did Israel want the payments to continue?

Netanyahu’s government had recently decided to continue the policy so Barnea said yes. The Israeli government still welcomed the money from Doha.

Allowing the payments — billions of dollars over roughly a decade — was a gamble by Netanyahu that a steady flow of money would maintain peace in Gaza, the eventual launching point of the Oct. 7 attacks, and keep Hamas focused on governing, not fighting.

The Qatari payments, while ostensibly a secret, have been widely known and discussed in the Israeli news media for years. Netanyahu’s critics disparage them as part of a strategy of “buying quiet,” and the policy is in the middle of a ruthless reassessment following the attacks. Netanyahu has lashed back at that criticism, calling the suggestion that he tried to empower Hamas “ridiculous.”

U.K., American Warships Shoot Down Houthi-Launched Drones in Red Sea​

British and American warships shot down suspected Houthi-launched drones as attacks in the Red Sea against merchant ships continue for the third straight day.

USS Carney (DDG-64) shot down 14 drones launched Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, U.S. Central Command announced Saturday. It is unclear if the drones were headed toward a commercial ship. The drones were one-way attack unmanned aerial vehicles, according to the Central Command statement, posted on social media site X.

On Saturday, Houthi military forces launched a drone barrage in the direction of Israeli resort city, Eilat, also known by Palestinian name Umm Al-Rashrash. It is not clear if Carney shot down any of the drones heading toward Israel.

CAIRO/GAZA/JERUSALEM, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Israel appeared to confirm that new negotiations were under way to recover hostages held by Hamas, after a source said Israel's intelligence chief met the prime minister of Qatar, a country mediating in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a press conference on Saturday the war in Gaza was existential and must be fought until victory. He said Gaza would be demilitarised and under Israeli security control.

United Nations Reports 1 in 4 Gazans Are Starving​

RAFAH, Gaza Strip — More than half a million people in Gaza — a quarter of the population — are starving, according to a report Thursday by the United Nations and other agencies, highlighting the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s bombardment and siege on the territory in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack.

The extent of the population’s hunger eclipsed even the near-famines in Afghanistan and Yemen of recent years, according to figures in the report. The report warned that the risk of famine is “increasing each day,” blaming the hunger on insufficient aid entering Gaza.

U.S. Navy Helo Crews Kill Houthi Assault Boat Teams After Red Sea Attack​

Ten Houthi fighters are dead after attempted attacks on U.S. Navy forces and a merchant ship in the Red Sea, U.S. Central Command announced early Sunday morning.

The Houthis, embarking from Yemen, were attempting to seize MV Maersk Hangzhou and approached the container ship in four small boats.

“The small boats, originating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, fired crew served and small arms weapons at the MAERSK HANGZHOU, getting to within 20 meters of the vessel, and attempted to board the vessel,” reads the statement.
