EU steps in to save Radio Free Europe with $6.2m emergency fund after Trump cuts​

The European Union on Tuesday approved emergency funding to sustain Radio Free Europe after the Trump administration cut grants, citing concerns over a perceived liberal bias.

Established during the Cold War, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty broadcasts in 27 languages across 23 countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, and has been engaged in legal battles with the US administration.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that the bloc’s foreign ministers agreed to a €5.5m ($6.2m) contract aimed at supporting the broadcaster’s “vital” work. Described as “short-term emergency” aid, this funding acts as a “safety net” to preserve independent journalism, she said.

While the EU cannot cover the broadcaster’s global funding shortfall, Kallas emphasised its commitment to helping Radio Free Europe to “work and function in those countries that are in our neighbourhood and that are very much dependent on news coming from outside”.

Hi there, I first got 'online' in 1994 via Compuserve. Then I moved over to AOL in 1995. We know that the internet and digital communications in general have had a negative impact on AM radio. In the shadow of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, radio waves became a battlefield where Western broadcasters like Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the BBC, and Radio France International transmitted uncensored news and ideas into Eastern Europe, piercing through Soviet censorship and jamming efforts. These broadcasts were more than mere propaganda; they were vital lifelines of information and hope that challenged communist regimes, fueled dissident movements, and helped erode the Soviet grip on millions behind the Iron Curtain between 1949 and 1990.
During the Cold War (1947–1991), Western radio stations played a critical role in countering Soviet propaganda and providing uncensored information to audiences behind the Iron Curtain. Key broadcasters included Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), the BBC, and Radio France International (RFI), each with distinct operational approaches and impacts.
